Yes they will. A normal job application here in the states asks you to list your past employment starting with the most recent. You will need names & phone numbers of supervisors. You may have more luck in your case since the language is English there. My husband listed his references and I don't think anyone will call them to verify work history because they don't speak Arabic!

So they actually contact supervisors? What if they have moved on?

Maybe if you have the name of someone else there, maybe human resources director, that can verify your employment there. I'm really not 100% sure how it works for foreign work experience. Maybe someone else who has applied and had the company call overseas to verify will post their experience in this. But usually they do call to verify employment and to ask about your work ethic.

When I started work, I was given 5 days to get the documents confirming my dates of employment at all places I worked emailed to the checker in CT. Even though one company I worked for has HQ in Washington DC they were lazy to call the people and instead had me do all the legwork for them (and I already provided names, addresses, contact numbers and emails).

So much for employment verification.

So do you think I should go down that route?

If you are still in the UK (looks like you are) I would approach your current and former employers and ask them for an open reference. This should state your dates of employment and address matters such as your work ethic, time-keeping, sick leave, etc.

Makes it a lot easier for both you and your prospective US employer to have these, as it is exactly what your UK employers would provide anyway.

Timeline Summary:

K-1/K-2 NOA1 - POE: 9 February - 9 July 2010

Married: 17 July 2010

AOS mailed - Interview : 22 November 2010 - 10 March 2011

ROC mailed - approved: 14 February - 18 June 2013

Citizenship mailed - ceremony: 9 February - 7 June 2017

When my wife filled out her job application at the hospital

They asked for Supervisor references whom had worked or trained my wife

They sent a letter to Philippines to confirm, But my wife had already been working almost 1 month by the time the letter arrived in PI.

By law in the USA former employers are only allowed to confirm dates of employment. That doesn't mean they won't be asked for other things but they can be sued if they do ask or answer. It is better to get a letter of recommendation from former employers.

References aren't really necessary for many jobs, unless they're high profile. When they ask for references anyway, most times they just look at the information and nod their heads. Then, they don't call them and just ignore it.

When in USA and applying for jobs, will they ask for reference of past employment in UK?

Just give them Mary Poppins and Miss Havisham. It always impresses.

"The fact that we are here today to debate raising America’s debt limit is a sign of leadership failure. It is a sign that the U.S. Government can’t pay its own bills. It is a sign that we now depend on ongoing financial assistance from foreign countries to finance our Government’s reckless fiscal policies."

When I returned to the US after living abroad for a number of years I had a similar problem. I did include my overseas employer information as well as overseas references in my resume. I put their addresses and phone numbers (with relevant time difference information) but assuming that the potential employer may not want to go through the hassle I also included emails and whether or not the respondent could speak english. You would be surprised at the number of places that utilized the email of my references but never called them.

I also stated on my resume that I had letters of employment from my previous overseas employer upon request but no one ever asked to see them, but I do think it is a good thing to have.
