Hm cant I just say yes I have a foreign DL but I forgot it in Germany? I mean whatever, they wont give me a NC one without taking the tests so it doesnt really matter... And to reissue the German DL will cost €75. That's about 120 Dollars. Big waste of money!!! Apart from that - it's going to be a huge fight with German authorities because I dont have a residence in Germany anymore and then they wont issue a DL. Another bureaucracy :) ANd they are as strict, I can tell you! ;) I'm used to all kinds of bureaucratic lunatics, I'd say Germany invented that ;)

I believe NY is the only one where there is an issue, the simplest solution is not ta take it with you, just do the test as a new driver.

That's possible, but then you need to bring a licensed driver with you to the test (seeing that you can't drive by yourself to the test with "no license").

You're seriously over thinking this. I doubt the DMV would bother asking how you got there.

I don't know how it works in Philly, but in NY you do the test in a car you provide. The examiner gets in the car. If you are the only person in the car when he gets in, he's going to have a question for you, "Do you have a foreign license?". Because otherwise you would have been driving unsupervised on a learners permit. Oops.

Not in CO.

Pretty obvious that I had been driving for many years.

I assume NY is the same as CO, you need a learners permit first, just show that.

I don't know how it works in Philly either, as I took my test in California, but there they never asked me how I got to the DMV (my boss drove with me, but went to the supermarket while I took my test). They also never asked for my foriegn license (I offered it to them when I got the learners permit, but they told me to keep it as I couldn't exchange it for a US license without taking the test anyway).

Again, I think you're over thinking it. The world isn't a series of traps you can get caught in you know, only the USCIS is like that! :)

Driving with a learner's permit in NY requires that you have a licensed passenger over 21 in the passenger seat. Alternatively you need a licensed driver over 18 to drive the vehicle to the test site. Every other vehicle is going to have a learner permit holder, and a licensed adult in it. When you are all alone in your car, you will stick out like a sore thumb.

The person driving with you doesn't come with you on your test though did they? So they aren't required to actually be there when the test guy walks out to the car with you. In my case as I stated above, the guy drove with me (more because it was his car than a legal requirement), but dissappeared for a hour while I took the test. This didn't raise any questions. Maybe it does in NY, but I seriously doubt it.

If nothing else:

Tester: "Where is your co-driver"(?)

Testee: "Oh, they went on an errand, they will be back for me in an hour".

I guess this might not work if there's nothing close to the DMV.

OK, I see the difference. In NY, everyone drives to a test site (which may or may not be close to a DMV site), and they are parked one behind the other, waiting for the examiner. When the examiner is finished with one test, that car is driven away by either the newly licensed driver, or if they failed, by the licensed driver that originally drove the car there. Everyone then pulls forward, and he gets in the next car in line. You never go into the DMV office.

Interesting! Sounds too efficient to be used by the California DMV though.

There you just go into the DMV office, and the tester walks out with you to your car.

I guess you might get caught out then doing that. So the solution is to bring a mate.

I went to the a Cali DMV and we had to go in the DMV and I needed a licensed driver with me... hubby had gone to the Seven Eleven to get something and I was going to go in and the lady wouldn't let me in without a licensed driver.... anywho, we went in and did our thing and then were told to drive our car to the testing area where we had to line up with a bunch of cars and then the tester came out to the car....

I had a friend who failed his test for this: his licensed driver drove him to the DMV, then pulled over the side, got out of the car, and my friend drove up 50 feet to the testing center. The DMV lady immediately walked over, asked to see his license (he said he was there for the test and just had a permit) and she failed him on the spot.

Yes, well if you're stupid enough to let DMV employees see you driving without a license.... ;)
