Have you gotten a great deal/special buy at a 2nd hand store?

And if you have, what find(s) did you think were a great deal or

something special and the like?

Ever since I painted the living room and put all the pictures up on

the walls and on theshelves that Rick made for me, I've had this big bare spot above the

entertainment center that I was saving for something that

might "catch my eye" and fit well there. So 2 Saturdays ago, I had

Rick drive us to the local Good Will to check out what paintings,

wall hangings and stuff that I might be able to use...

They had the big stuff hanging on the walls, but for some unknown

reason, my eyes were attracted to a small frame that was on a shelf

below. It wasn't anything special to look at, in good shape but just

a wooden 5 x 7 frame with a matting that had a small rose on it

around an oval opening, and some words printed in fancy script. I

picked it up and read it...and oh my God I felt so weird, I can't

even describe it. The tears were pouring down my face and I couldn't

seem to stop them...lol...I got all embarrassed over it.

The words just fit Rick and I to a T. And even better, when I turned it over,

I saw the price tag on it - 1$. SOLD hahaha

We still have an empty spot OVER our entertainment center, but

there's a new spot that's taken ON the top of it hehe.

A simple wooden frame, bought for a dollar, with these words...

(L) "When the one man loves the one woman and the one woman loves the

one man, the very angels leave HEAVEN and come and sit in that house

and sing for joy." (L)

Anyone else find something special in a 2nd hand store?

A DKNY dress shirt 'prairie couture' from a resale shop with the original tag and extra button envelope still attached. It was never worn. I paid $1.25.

A new with tags J.Jill cashmere sweater for $2.00.

A coffee press for $1.00

My stepdad is a book hound and will scour the thrift stores for valuable books which he later resells. My mom browses the rest of the store and is always calling me telling me about some great deal she found.

Not quite as cheap as the other buys but I got a really nice and comfy couch and loveseat for $100 :) They are in decent condition too (they're white and amazingly have no major stains, just some discolorations - yay for slipcovers!).

found lots and lots of books for great buys. J and I love auctions and yard sales (when it isn't too dang hot!) so we find lots of fun little things. I think my most favourite buy was our "postage stamp" stained glass window/wall hanging. When I worked in a small community museum a while back we had an exhibit of antique quilts, and one of the quilts we had on display was a postage stamp quilt, queen size, with 1000s of little squares all patched together. It was so beautiful, and the amount of work that went into it -- well, the impression of it stayed with me all this time. When this particular stained glass window came up on auction, it reminded me so much of that quilt that I HAD to have the window. We got it for a very reasonable price (for stained glass) and it hangs in our dining area.

My other favourites are my collection of b&w photos taken in Nova Scotia in the 1920s and 30s, that I have found hither and yon in my travels.

In Canada (well, at least in Yarmouth NS) they have these shops called Frenchy's. I found Joel an exquisite leather jacket there for $9!

I found my daughter's wedding finery (she was the "princess" at our wedding) at a second hand store near me for $25. Online these same dresses (just a bit of tulle and satin with sequins) were going for $120 to $130.

I don't mind second hand...you get some awesome fantabulous deals if you know where and when to look. :)

oh, Frenchy's!!!! How I miss that place! The best ones are in Joel's (former) neck of the woods -- they get all the best stuff first. Some good stuff there for sure!

I've gotten a few cool things. My favourite so far: a collection of three tiny little prints of old houses, one of which looks a lot like mine. They're about 2" x2.5", and cost me 25 cents each.

I bought a $1,000.00 entertainment center for just over $400.00 at a consignment store a few years back. Looked just like new and really still does - almost. Yes, I still have it and am not planning on getting rid of it any time soon either.

I also bought a couch once at a consignment store - a quick fix at the time. No furniture store had anything I liked for immediate delivery and I needed a couch like yesterday. I found one at a consignment store that I could just pick up right then and there. It was actually a fairly nice couch and cost me only $140.00 or so. We tossed it just a month ago when we moved from Cincinnati to Tampa. I'd say having used it for close to 4 years, I've gotten my money's worth out of that one.
