ummm. CBP is telling me (by phone) that I need all the EPA and DOT forms, faxed 72 hrs ahead of time, and call the POE I'm using to make an appointment for an inspector to be there, and pay 2.5% duty (which I questioned, and will phone the POE specifically to clarify).

That's the procedure for US citizens/residents importing a car from another country..... not for people who are bringing one with them when they immigrate. Different process altogether. If your car is within 1 or 2 years old (can't remember the official # at the moment) then it is dutiable. Some people have been able to get by without paying. Some of us had to pay the State taxes on the value of the car when you go to register it. Can you cross at the Peace Bridge in Fort Erie? They know what they're doing there.

Sorry to hijack your topic, but I have my own car question that is somewhat along the same lines:

What if he's driving down, but then his parents are taking his car(which is technically in his dad's name) back up with them when they come down for the wedding? I mean, we aren't terribly sure how he's entering yet, and he's not bringing a lot (his clothing and his computer, and that's about it, to be honest) so I suppose he could fly, but we're just not sure at this point because we don't know much of the details.

And if you do have to import it, how do you go about importing a used car? I would assume we'd still have to go through Ford to get the letter, right? (I'm almost hoping he'll just fly down here because we have my car, and it's better than his, lol)

He won't have to import his Dad's car when he crosses if they are taking it back with them.

Yeah planning on Peace Bridge. My car is 10 years old.

Hey no worries :)

I sometimes wish all this absolutely valuable information could be funneled into the wiki automatically, searching through topic after topic is always confounding to me.

  • 14 years later...

Can someone please call me at ***** will be very grateful.

I am planning to buy a used Honda CRV from Canada 2018 or above with low mileage & no accidents will check carfax report.

Do we need car title from Canada?  does it mean I have to register Car in Canada.

I am Canadian Citizen with US address & US drivers license but no Canadian address & Canadian drivers license.

I moved to US in 2020.

Call will help me a lot please I won't take more than 15 mins of your precious time.

car is for personal use but in case I want to sell my car lets say after 1 or 2 or 5 yrs is that possible?

What does the compliance letter state will I have to modify my car?

Compliance letter can be sent via email.? I don't have fax. & waiting 10 days is a lot as my daughter's school starts.

recall letter needed?

If Import process can be done at a later date after crossing the border, then we can have compliance letter & recall letter in no hurry, correct?
