more than one way to skin a cat

I said that to my 5 year old grandson the other day. He of course repeated it at kindergarten class which was lost on the American humour.

If the audience consisted of 5-year-olds, that would make sense.

UK kids (or adults) wouldn't know what 'crying uncle' meant - 2 nations separated by a single language as they say..

The guy doing the Naturalization English test will have no idea I don't speak American hopefully

I meant that "more than one way to skin a cat" is a common expression here too.

Strange I had to explain it to the kindergarten teacher when I picked him up. However she is an immigrant herself so might not have been familiar with it. I think she had some strange notion I might be responsible for an outbreak of furless cats in the area.

Ah--that would explain it.

I just don't think what you're wanting to do (get a mortgage in the UK for a house in the US) is possible.

Can you not qualify for a US mortgage on your own? What have they told you when you tried?

Here is a quote about getting UK mortages to buy property in Spain

Seems that UK banks do lend on overseas property and they do it in the foreign currency too...

How about flicking through the florida property sites for Brits...

Several UK mortgage providers will lend funds of up to 80 per cent of the purchase price for second home purchase over, typically, a 15-year term.

Euro mortgages, which are tied to the rate set by the European Central Bank (ECB), currently lower than the Bank of England base rate, may seem an attractive option, and several UK lenders offer them. However, because of the volatility of the currency markets, a euro mortgage may not be the best option for many people, who cannot afford to lose heavily should the currency move against them.

UK to Spain makes sense to me as they are both in the EU. I just don't see how UK to US would work - though I guess anything's possible, esp. given the Wells link that Lansbury provided.

Yes I vote Wells as the best option too...

Jeez I am glad all this stuff is behind me now - it was all so uncertain when I was getting set up, but it all gets sorted out in the end.

Actually it's a source of satisfaction looking back at it all - but a time of great uncertainty when I was doing it.

Thank you for the replies. I will call the Wells Fargo contact in London tomorrow and see what they say.

We contacted the Wells Fargo in Indiana and the guy was totally unhelpful. 'Fill in the on-line application' we were told. Except for the fact that the online application for preapproval of a mortgage has no function for inputting international addresses for employers and such. Ergh! So I have a message into this guy to call us and maybe we can go over the application on the phone. Probably have more luck with the London contact. Thank you to Lansbury for supplying it.

We have heard from our real estate agent in the US that no one has put an offer in on 'our' house in Indiana, so it's still a possibility.

The housing mkt stats for the US came out this morning and were strongly up.

Don't panic , I think these are repos that people are speculating on.

Went to our housing association meeting yesterday and we have repos happening and pending even though it's a nice area and this town has had the best house prices in the whole of the USA for the last x years.

We are paying to mow the lawns and paint the repo houses so nobody knows the mkt is weak.
