I'm betting on little to none. At least not much worse than before the shooting.

ABU DHABI, United Arab Emirates — The U.S. Homeland Security secretary says she is working to prevent a possible wave of anti-Muslim sentiment after the shootings at Fort Hood in Texas.

Janet Napolitano says her agency is working with groups across the United States to try to deflect any backlash against American Muslims following Thursday's rampage by Army Maj. Nidal Malik Hasan, a Muslim who reportedly expressed growing dismay over the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.

The shootings left 13 people dead and 29 wounded.

Napolitano was in the United Arab Emirates on Sunday for talks with security officials and a meeting with women university students in Abu Dhabi.

Maybe not, but she would look very bad if she didn't go through these motions, it is totally within her agency's remit and I for one am glad they are taking these precautions.

Refusing to use the spellchick!

I have put you on ignore. No really, I have, but you are still ruining my enjoyment of this site. .

Probably not, but it's gotta be tough for Muslims (esp of Arab descent) serving in the military, however few & far between their numbers may be.

I only think there would be some backlash IF

there were serious anti-us writings found in the

Major's personal collection.

Otherwise, IMO, he freaked out cause he didn't want to go, period.

Has nothing to do with his background or religious choice.

But hei - that's me..

Might be a huge collection of Bubba-ish folk in the USA that don't see the situation like that, at all, and will question

the INCLUSION of Muslims into the US Army.

I don't get along well with Bubbas, not at all.

Sometimes my language usage seems confusing - please feel free to 'read it twice', just in case !

One thing I find very ironic is this. US perceptions of Muslims are nothing compared to Japanese Americans in World War II or even worse German Americans in World War 1. I recently discovered that in my home town of Saint Louis (which had a high percentage of Germans hence. Budweiser etc.) a mob wrapped a German up in an american flag and burned him alive.

I'd say if the American Muslim population hasn't been interned or random people burned alive we can't be doing all that badly in comparison to the past.

No! It's against terrorism. There's a difference. You wouldn't blur the line between radical Islam and moderate Islam, would you?

"The fact that we are here today to debate raising America’s debt limit is a sign of leadership failure. It is a sign that the U.S. Government can’t pay its own bills. It is a sign that we now depend on ongoing financial assistance from foreign countries to finance our Government’s reckless fiscal policies."

while not on as large of a scale as the internment of japanese americans, the idea that we've made a lot of progress since the 1940's is just laughable.

The interrogation and detention regime implemented by the U.S. resulted in the deaths of over 100 detainees in U.S. custody -- at least. -http://www.salon.com/opinion/greenwald/2009/06/30/accountability/

as well, there have been numerous acts of violence committed against muslims in the united states since 2001, because they were muslim. the number of deaths is believed to be 19.

does the sikh guy who was gunned down at a gas station because he was mistakenly thought to be a muslim not count?

so when frank roque gunned down balbir sodhi at a mesa, az gas station because he thought he was muslim because of the way he was dressed, he was fighting "against terrorism"?

Islam requires moderation. Radicalism isn't about Islam; it's about socio-political ideology.

Put it into perspective. In 2006 alone, there were 18,573 homicides. Multiply that times 8 for the last 8 years of war and 19 Muslims killed since 9/11 is pretty low by comparison especially with ready access to guns in this country. In any case, guys like MAJ Hasan have killed their fair share of Americans.

I hear over and over that Islamic terrorists are not true Muslims, therefore not part of Islam. If that's the case why do people here on VJ (and the world) attack people who criticize radical Islam?

I've even been called a racist by these inbred retards. Hint.... Islam isn't a race morons!
