November 2009 K1 CSC Filers

Anyone else out there a November 2009 California K1 filer?

We just sent our K1 on Friday (11/6) via USPS priority. Looks like the processing times for both Vermont and California are trending downward... VJ's best guess right now is USCIS adjudication sometime around the end of January.

I'm hoping to have visa in hand sometime around the middle/end of March. It's probably a terrible idea to try to plan a wedding/honeymoon when the dates are still up in the air, but it's really tempting, especially since prices are likely to climb as the time gets closer and places fill up...

A journey begins...

26-Feb-10 - Received packet 4

What embassy are you dealing with?

Port of Spain, Trinidad

... things happen real slow on the island. I lived there a few years and I'm terrified of anything government there (US or TT)!

The K-1's are being approved a lot faster than they were earlier this year but that can always change. We waiting 4 months to get an approval and are on our second month waiting on an interview. My advise, don't have any expectations because in this process, there can always be delays. We are close to the end and we still have not made any plans and are not going to until that visa is in his hand. If you make plans and have expectations for certain dates...you will put extra stress on an already stressful process. I know that you want to, I know how you feel but I never thought that it would take this long just to get an interview date and we still do not have one...I know this is easier said than done but you are going to have to be patient. Believe me I have had my moments but unfortunately, this is just how this process works...

Thanks for the advice. What you're saying makes a lot of sense, but it can be hard telling friends and family "well we're planning on getting married soon, but we don't know when or where or...". It seems like from many of the other folks' timelines that once they get the NOA2, an interview is about 45 days away. Of course there are probably a ton of variables, and I'm hoping that having a smallish embassy (Port of Spain) versus presumably a larger one (London) might help.

So you don't get an interview date until you finish the packets/medicals?

Maybe once we have an interview date, that's when the planning can begin? It doesn't seem like many people get denied at the interview, and the visa is issued a few days later.

I totally understand where you are coming from. I have said about 1,000 times "We don't know when it will be but we are hoping...this date or that date. Even as close as we are now, I just have to keep saying...we don't know...yet. I think planning once you have an interview date is a better idea. I would not book tickets or anything but have a reasonable date in mind. The one thing that is helpful in this process is that it is not a "normal" situation so friends and family tend to be a bit more flexible and the expectations are not as high because your plans are not in your hands and those who are close to us know that...I finally started telling people when they asked me when the wedding date is.."when the federal government tells me"

ha, that's a great reply. Any idea what the government actually does during the processing? Like, do they do a background check, or is the wait more like the time it takes for your file to make it onto somebody's desk?

There is a great post that Gary and Alla posted with an interview of the director of the USCIS for Vermont. He explains exactly what happens with the file. Very informative...From what I remember, there are background checks done but a majority of the time waiting is for someone to actually pick up the file and review it.

Saw the check was cashed and used that number to check the status online. Got the NOA1 on 9-Nov... Still waiting for it in the mail

In regards to the wedding planning, I took a risk and did start to go ahead with the planning...

We filed in August 09 and we started planning a wedding for September '10 and put down a deposit on a venue who promised us we could push the date forward if need be. Take that for what you will...getting the NOA2 can be the biggest hurdle in this process, although there's a place to trip up everywhere along the process, unfortunately.

For example, once you get NOA2 and are sent to the National Visa Center, you could be put into "Additional Processing" (AP) for further FBI name checks with no timeline estimate, but usually <50 days. At the interview stage, you could be put into AP again or AR "administrative review" which can take 6 months and more.

Definitely read your regional specific forum to see how your country works in regards to how often these types of things occur; unfortunately the MENA (Middle East and North Africa) region tends to get all of the delays, but other consulates like the UK not, unless you weren't born a UK citizen, for example.

Good luck!

Sad to know that cali_derry09, have you asked your USC fiance/e if he/she can track where your application has reached? Or did you try to check your case status on USCIS site? What does it says?
