I am a bit confused regarding this. Does the DS 156 have to be filled out online? You can not type or handwrite this correct? If somebody can clarify this I would really appreciate it. We have the DS 156K, but we also need the DS 156. Thanks!

I posted this too soon, I already got an answer to this on an earlier post. Thank you for all your help! Now I can not delete this topic.

Oh yikes, what answer did you get? My fiance filled his out by hand (haven't sent it in yet). The website said you had to print it out and fill it out by hand I thought. Thanks in advance!

It has to be filled out online, because a barcode is generated once he is done. I will find the link and send it to you in another post.

You can still fill out the DS forms by hand in the Philippines. Depends upon the embassy.

USEM "recommends" you do online but it's still not mandatory.

Thank you SO much. Geezo, we would have sent off that form and been screwed. lol I was a bit confused on that other thread....they don't want you using "none" or "n/a" on questions like "other names used", "name of spouse", etc...?

Hi there,

There is a sample form that is filled out. I am sure you can use none, but not N/A. Check out this site and just look at the DS 156 sample form.

I hope this helps.

Oh great thanks! I must have missed that form in the sample forms section. Seems that if you put none, the software they use eliminates the word anyway, so it ends up blank in the end. Weird! Thanks for the info!

I did some more research on the above due to my own confusion with the ds-156 because my fiance 'did not' use the online form mentioned above but instead used the hard copy he recieved from the Embassy in Delhi. He hand-printed the info onto the form and submitted it to the Embassy without any problems or issues what-so-ever.

Some Embassy's 'do' require the ds-156 to be filled out online and won't accept them otherwise. They will 'specify' this in their instructions. As well, there are other Embassies that 'do not' specify either way such as the Delhi Embassy which means that this is not mandatory to fill it out online.

All in all, just follow the instructions and specifics your particular Embassy gives you. They're your best source.

One reason I'm thinking that some Embassies aren't making this online form mandatory could be that soon all Embassy's will be making the transition to using the DS-160 anyway which will eventually replace current nonimmigrant application forms, including that of the Ds-156. Additionally, not all countries are equipped for convenient or easy access to computers and for some would be a diffcult feat, depending on where they live which may be why India doesn't make the online form mandatory like some others have done. Probably not 100% correct on this, but do believe it has some influence.

That makes sense, thanks for taking the time to do some research. My fiance is dealing with the London embassy and they didn't even send him any forms, just a letter saying to go to their website and get the forms there. We worked on filling out the DS-156 online today and it was a piece of cake. So, at least if they require it be done online, it's done and everything is good.
