Let's please restrict this thread to freedom of speech discussion and not drag other things in here...

Laws can be unconstitutional. We are a constitutional republic, that means no mob rule.

I thought we were a democracy?

limited

previously mentioned - fire in a theater.

you have the right to hear music. i also have the right not to hear it.

inciting a riot might be to some free speech. it's also gonna get you a jail sentence.

telling everything you know about a classified government program will do the same.

say you'll off the president and you'll discover yourself the object of attention by MIB

so freedom of speech is limited. just use common sense.

It's not enough to use common sense. Every case you described is a legal constraint on free speech. If you know something to be illegal, don't do/say it.

I agree with others though that limits on 'freedom of speech' should be self-regulatng rather than legislative - which is to a large extent what society already does - marginalising people who hold deviant views.

But don't the legislative limits reflect social views when a country democratically elects its legislature?

The First Ammendment was not written to protect only social popular or "politically correct" speech, but also to ensure that minority views could be freely expressed.

omg!

I meant don't bring the flaming that was in other threads in here. I didn't mean we couldn't have a discussion.

And I think this thread so far has been essentially on topic anyway...

"Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the government for a redress of grievances."

Just for sake of argument, someone please point out where it says free speech is to be limited? This is the way the writers of the constitution wanted it. If they wanted to put restrictions on it, where are they?

And I do agree that just because you have the right to do or say something doesn't mean you should.

Freedom in any area is never about just what one individaul wants. Freedom is about responsibility to other people also. One of our greatest gifts by our creator is that of us being "Self Determinate" beings. We have the same rights as the God who made us in regards to our choices of self determination. What we say is a reflection of who we are. Out of our mouths come what is stored up in our hearts. If the treasury of our heart is good then good things come flowing out. If that heart is full of darkness, then insensitive, selfish and self serving speech comes out.

What we do with our speech can effect other people. What about speach that is based on truth, without regard to consequneces? What about standing up and saying so when something is morally wrong. What about speaking up for those who have no voice?

So say what you want to, but remember that what you say has the power to bless and encourage or tear and break down.
