The legislation would require most Americans to carry insurance and provide federal subsidies to those who otherwise could not afford it. Large companies would have to offer coverage to their employees. Both consumers and companies would be slapped with penalties if they defied the government's mandates.

To pay for the expansion of coverage, the bill cuts Medicare's projected spending by more than $400 billion over a decade. It also imposes a tax surcharge of 5.4 percent on income over $500,000 in the case of individuals and $1 million for families.

hurray for small victories.

i'm glad they passed something, and i'm especially glad that insurers will not be able to deny or dump people based on pre-existing conditions... that's huge.

we'll see what actually passes the Senate. still would like to know how/if they plan on reining in health care costs. that's another huge elephant in the room.

Yes it passed... be prepared for the Country to be even more screwed up. -just sayin

:yes::yes::yes::yes::yes::yes::yes:

Again, the same tired point that was made when Medicare passed. It was wrong then and it is wrong now.

Medicare has been on life support for years. This plan will decimate it for funding in an elaborate ponzi scheme that does nothing to cut costs, but merely changes titles. Whatever happened to cutting waste and fraud? No, that's too hard, but many people are easily fooled by this bait and switch.

this is absolutely impossible. i'm amazed that anyone would look to gov't as a means to control cost. you see, to contain costs means to give up votes, they have to continue to buy votes to stay in office so they aren't going to contain anything. their job is more important than what happens to america after they are gone (dead and gone). they know that no individual will ever be blamed for destroying america (they can't find an individual to blame for the housing bust). it is all about buying votes so do not look to your elected officials to contain cost, it is not possible. this bill isn't to benefit americans, it is to benefit individual careers, they could care less about the finances, this is to stay in office. power corrupts.

as a disclaimer or whatever you want to call it... republicans are no better than the dems, absolutely no better!!! the only time repubs do not want to spend is when they aren't in power. as soon as they get in power, they suddenly see a need to spend. power corrupts.

there is a difference however between dems and repubs... dems, they don't care who is in power, they like to spend no matter, but the repubs, as soon as the dems get in power, they immediately start to get thrifty and concerned about the future of america... ** them. power corrupts.

Life..... Nobody gets out alive.

Well, an opportunity was offered in the House to vote to eliminate this supposed ponzi scheme. And somehow, nobody had the guts to take the offer and vote to get rid of this socialist scheme. Besides, Medicare has done far better than the PHI to contain the growth of health care cost over the last few decades - cost growth under PHI was almost 50% higher than under Medicare over the last 30 years. If PHI would do as well as Medicare in cost containment, we wouldn't be faced with a health care system set to bankrupt the nation in the very near future.

And remember that it was the GOP just a few years ago that added an unfunded trillion dollar prescription drug entitlement to Medicare.

Wednesday, February 9, 2005

The White House released budget figures yesterday indicating that the new Medicare prescription drug benefit will cost more than $1.2 trillion in the coming decade, a much higher price tag than President Bush suggested when he narrowly won passage of the law in late 2003.

It wont make it to 2013! If it even gets through the senate.
