I am very sorry your visa is getting delayed because of this, but in Muslim law a muslim woman can not marry a non-muslim man, but its ok for a muslim man to marry a non-muslim women.

Get the certificate from your Imam who performed your Nikkah and have the same attested by some Islamic organisation. if you are in Mumbai then i suggest you trying to approach Islamic Research Foundation and i am sure they will provide you with something which will prove helpful. Go through the website

http://www.irf.net/

Hopefully you will get your Visa

we went to the interview in mumbai india and they basically harrassed my wife until noon about her religion and then they said that they need proof that i am no longer christian and that i converted to islam. they said without it that they cannot issue a visa to my wife. we are having our imam from my city write a letter stating that he knows me to be a muslim. the way my wife described it to me is that they wanted some kind of document from the government that i changed my religion and noone i know seems to think there even is such a thing in america. has anyone heard of this kind of document existing in america? thank you all for your advice.

I accepted Islam over two years ago and have never needed anything but my word that I am a muslim. I flew to Pakistan and married my husband. We are in AP now. Inshallah both ur wife and my husband receive their visas soon.

Sorry this happened to you, religion is personal..........but the only thing I can think of why they want proof your husband is now also Muslim like you, is because they know that in Islam, it is haram and not normally accepted in Muslim cultures that a Muslim woman will marry a non-Muslim man.

Hope you get the visa fast :star:

MaSalama

 that is the point.so better bring a certificate from a mosque in usa declaring that your husband is a muslim, however if the husband was muslim by roots so it won't be a problem if married to a christian woman, hey it is written on the us embassy web page of cairo. but don't worry it's easy to get this paper inshallah

Salaam,

I agree with Waleed's girl and Zahrasalem. Even I had some trouble just trying to get married :P. I converted to Islam 4 yrs ago. I didn't get married until Feb 09. I accepted Islam in the USA and was not issued a certificate or anything similar to a baptism. Everyone just knew that I accepted Islam and had plenty of witnesses. My husband is an Indian National but is currently residing in Dubai. I could not get married in Dubai w/out parental consent even though I am a legal adult and my family are non-muslims. Option #2 was that I convert to Islam again  . They did not recognize me as a Muslim since I did not legally change my name. They actually requested that I accept Islam right there in the govt's presence and change my name. Imagine if I did that and how much trouble it would be to have a name on my marriage certificate not match my passport and try to apply for my husband's visa. We thought to get proof from my witnesses that I accepted Islam but the govt wouldn't accept it as proof.

We found a way to get married in India through a Qazi by proxy. I provided a Power of Attorney for my friend in India to stand on my behalf. It had to be signed by 2 Muslim witnesses. As a result, we have a marriage certificate recogized in Islam and was later certified/attested by the Indian govt. We followed this w/traditional celebration of our marriage.

In your case, I agree you should provide some attestation from the govt there that you were married in an Islamic way and perhaps also include a notarized statement from your witnesses that you did accept Islam. Maybe the attestation will work in India.

I am really confused. There is freedom of religion in the US. You can worship whatever way suits you and no one has the right to question you on it. It just does not make sense. Have you tried calling the consulate and speaking with someone?

i remember a friend telling me that a muslim cannot marry somebody outside his religion.if they must get married the nonmuslim spouse must convert to islam.maybe that could be the reason they r asking for more document.good luck to u,

The right to worship is not being questioned. What is being questioned is the bona fides of the relationship between the couple. The is is not an issue of religious freedom. The sooner the OP realizes that and complies with the request, the sooner the visa will be in hand.

The problem is the OP figuring out what document to give the embassy. There won't be a baptismal certificate, so would the embassy accept signed affidavits from his two witnesses?

The OP says that India doesn't document the religion on the marriage certificate. What about the marriage contract, is it documented there?

In India, when you registered your marriage, does the registration list you religion?

Waiting.....Waiting....waiting....waiting....and more waiting..........

this is not an issue of religious freedom.......the embassy understands that muslim women do not marry non muslim men so they are questioning the relationship if it is real or not based on this..............

Yes, this is very true. Because these types of situations are not very common.

Sounds like a lawsuit waiting to happen. I understand that generally muslim woman do not marry non muslims but there must be exceptions to this especially in a country where islam isn't the primary religion.
