My husband and I are working on the same job, stage rigging right after i got my EAD. in my w-4 i always checked the married since it's true we are. He said to me it's okey for me to check the single box. and besides i noticed that his deduction was higher than mine. I feel sorry about it, and it looks like I am paid more than him. in some of the jobs we have now I checked the single box. well i was told that, we can have joint or separate filing. it's up to us. any idea if this won't affect my PR status? please, any opinion is highly appreciated.

thanks!

God bless!

Tax returns are not relevant to USCIS, except to prove that there is enough money coming in to support the beneficiary. Joint returns are one evidence of a bona fide marriage, but surely you have others like joint checking acct, joint lease, etc. etc.

This is in no way an immigration issue, but OK. Yes, if yo are married and you want to check "single" you can. The result is the government will take more money from your paycheck and give it back to you when you file your tax return. You are giving the government an interest free loan and they will gladly accept it.

So will I.

apparently you and your husband have more money than you need so you want to loan some of it to the government every week. Nice of you.

I agree. I can't understand why some people are so thrilled when they get a fat check back from the US Treasury after filing their taxes. To me, this is no different than being happy if your employer holds back one of your paychecks for an extra 4 months.

klik2chat, use the withholding calculator on the IRS website to figure out how how many dependents you and your husband should be claiming for tax withholding. Your objective is to come as close to breaking even on April 15th as possible, or possibly even owe a little money. As Gary says, if you get a refund then you're just giving the government an interest free loan.

Of course, if you live in California and haven't changed your state withholding since November 1st, then the state is basically forcing you to give them an interest free loan, and you can expect to be repaid next April with an I.O.U.
