My wife, from Brasil, has been in the U.S. now for a year.

She has tried, unsuccsessfully to pass the drivers written test, these tests are not given in Portuguese

and she is struggling with the Spanish rendition, she drove for the first 4 months she was here, until we spode to

a local cop who said she was driving illegal and subject to arrest for no license.

She claims she has spoken to a Lawyer here who claims that she could hasve been issued

a temporary driving permit, for 2 year duration, at the consulate when she got her K-1 Visa.

Since U.S. drivers Licenses are controlled by the individual states not the INS or ICE and the state we live in

requires obtaining a state driver licenses within 30 days of establihing residence, I do not believe that this Lawyer is fully informed.

This has caused a considerable rift.

Has anyone been issued a temporary, 2 year duration, driving permit at a consulate, or even heard of this?

No and no. My wife did apply for and receive an international license in her home country which is valid for 1 year (at least in Wisconsin). However, my insurance doesn't cover international licenses so it turned out to be worthless

K1: 01/15/2009 (mailed I-129F) - 06/23/2009 (visa received)

AOS: 08/08/2009 (mailed I-485, I-765, & I-131) - 10/29/2009 (received GC)

Have you contacted your local Motor Vehicle Department? Not Sure the state where you and your wife live but I have not heard of a 2 year temporary license, unless you are referring to the learners permit. If not mistaken, in every state you only have 30 to transfer your driving "privilege [or license] if you are a new resident.

Some States MAY allow the transfer of international licenses, but contact your local office first.. I live in NY and I asked my fiancée to start applying for an international license in Brazil thinking she will be able to transfer it here. I called DMV and they won’t accept transfers of international license. Only works if you are visiting.

Unfortunately no other association such as AAA will govern the local laws adopted by DMV.

Exactly the same information I keep coming up with.

Works for visitors, but not residents.

If she was visiting it would be valid, she is not a visitor, Lawyers are useless.

Just succeeded fin upsetting her and making her angry at me.
