Questions:

If i do the K3, which is stated as having the same processing times as the K1, what would be my advantage over the K1 exactly.

Congrats on the engagement! The K-1 is faster than the k-3 - that's why most of us chose that one! Once your man gets here and you get married, you apply for AP (advanced parole) so he can travel. Ours only took about 2 months - see our timeline.

To reiterate as to what Jonesie, Mindy, Rhonda and Shauna have all said......ladies (and/or if we have any men that are newbies)....

My suggestion.....have a file in your computer (or print the information and have a file) --I have both....name your file

VJ info and everything that has been said that is IMPORTANT information and/or simple things like paying the $100 PRIOR to your interview and KEEPING the receipt (because you take that into the interview with you). You can pay ahead of time, we paid the day before. Keep that information somewhere that the same SIMPLE questions are right there in your "saved" file. Having the forms TYPED, not handwritten, that kind of stuff...

The process is very very cut and dry if you have the information all in one place, you'll be good to go. I had the forms all completed a month prior, but I re-printed everything the day before I went down for the interview. I had updated letters of intent (not signed by Craig) printed up so that he could sign them. They do NOT need to be notarized and they never took them.

Sorry that "I" am being harsh, but there is simple stuff and then questions that need to be answered because things HAVE changed and constantly are changing. The only things that have changed ---the Embassy moved, they now need the

no (non)-impediment BS thing --which took about a month for Craig to receive, Frontal photos, no sides (as Mindy stated) and forms to be typed. I just took the example that is on VJ and typed "my/our" info in there and printed it out.

I also keep a file (in my computer) of everyones interview information, ie what was needed, taken, etc etc for those that have questions in the future.

Its about time that the Embassy gets even MORE strict with paperwork (a little more organized would be ALOT better and less hassle) ....what "I" truly wish is that they make it MANDATORY for the ones that are coming here to go to a school for 90 days (or so) to help them learn and understand what to expect in the US!!! and if they can't get through the SIMPLE stuff, than they are denied.

It does NOT matter HOW many times you tell your man about things here, they will NOT "listen" (and/or believe you) until they get here and they deal with it themselves. Craig STILL thinks money grows on trees and working HARD for a paycheck is just ???!!! Each and every day is a challenge and like I've mentioned tons of times before, if you don't have children.....you NEED patience with your significant other when they arrive!!!! and be prepared to repeat and teach them almost EVERYTHING !!!!! I've raised my son (who is 13) ....didn't really and truly think I'd have to basically raise another one !!!

Even if we weren't ####### before this process, we turn out to be that way!! We've all had different situations with dealing with the Embassy and some harder than others....mine included. As I've stated numerous times in the past, "I" was the one interviewed NOT my husband at all --which is crazy!! If you don't intend to go to the interview, they will ask LOTS of questions and the interview is nerve wracking as ALL GET OUT!!! I felt like crying, throwing up and laughing hysterically all in one breath !!! Giving birth was easier !!!

If you have ANY questions feel free to PM me !!!

We're all here for SUPPORT and answer the tough questions, although ...again, us "veterans" may not have the "new" answers......only the newbies can help those that are going through the process especially since Dec 2006

Good luck !!!

Kelly

Very valid points. It's not so much Jomo thinks money grows on trees.........he gets it. His family, on the other hand.......................

I'm going to stress this once again, that this process is NOT easy ESPECIALLY WHEN THEY ARRIVE HERE !!!! There's a HUGE adjustment for them --well everyone!!! It does NOT matter how many times you say something and "prepare" them in advance. What they've seen, heard, watched in the movies...will NOT compare to how it REALLY is here in the states.

Do NOT go into this with blinders on and think that everything will be sooooooooo hunky dory.

IF you do not have children, it will be like having an ADULT CHILD for awhile !!! If you do not have patience ....

VERY TRUE  Many of the couples that used to be on VJ have since split up and many others are having problems. You think you know someone, but how well do you really know them? So you've been to Jamaica a few times for a week at a time? You've never lived together. You're on vacation when you go down there so there's NO stress. No work. No problem! When he gets here, it's a whole different story. I called off our wedding 2x in less than 2 months  Luckily, we're one of the lucky couples who have "made it".

No, us veterans are not being mean :P Just trying to prepare you!

No, us veterans are not being mean :P Just trying to prepare you!

.....but you will never truly be able to be prepared until it actually happens to you. It is a very tough adjustment for these guys. They are like 10 year old boys and you are their mother. Everything is new and exciting -- UNTIL it hits them that they don't know the area, can't work, don't have any money, have no freedom and have to rely on you 100% for EVERYTHING while you trot off to work everyday and leave them in the house to watch TV, cook and clean.

There are many people who used to frequent this board who have "disappeared." Some are busy with their new lives (and will be back when it's time to "adjust") but many, many, many more are no longer together with the man they were, "Madly in love with" and "Couldn't wait to get here" and don't forget -- "Oh no, that won't happen to us." Those are the stories that you don't hear about. It would be really nice if these people would come back here to tell their stories so that "you" can be prepared.....but, their privacy is much more important. And I respect that.

Like Rhonda said -- we are not trying to be mean.......

People in Jamaica have a really false concept that when you go a farrin' you are gonna get rich quick. What do they think happens? When you cross the border you get a blank check? Or do you immediately get a job paying $80,000 year? Or do you get a money tree to plant in your back yard? :jest: Honestly, I don't know how they get such a misconception.

Tony has been here for over 2 years now and he's finally starting to get it. I've explained to him over and over again that you have to WORK hard to get nice things. Yes, I have a really nice car... and a nice truck.... and a decent house.... and lots of clothes and shoes..... but I've been working (and saving) since I was 13 years old. It doesn't happen overnight. I bought him an old car when he got his license - nothing fancy, just to get to work and back - and he complained about it :o It's ugly. It's not what I wanted. I want a truck. I was so pissed off at him (just ask Mindy!) I almost took the car back and sold it!! He thought that because I had a nice car, I guess I was supposed to buy him a nice car too :ranting: He's finally getting it that HE has to work and earn money and SAVE his money if he wants to buy his dream truck. You want that brand new pair of Timberlands that cost $150 or should you put that in your savings account toward your truck?

Ok, I'm done ranting now

I'm sooo thankful for all of you veterans on VJ. I'm young and thinking VERY thouroughly about this process. Its great hearing everyone's stories and hearing the real deal about how things work (and not just the fantasy stories lol). My parents always tell me the story of when they moved here to the states from Jamaica and the things they had to go through to make something of themselves. Hearing what other people have gone through is helping me to understand and preparing myself. Reading the posts everyday is teaching so much and the most important thing I've learned is not only to try and be with the one I love, but to also be practical and realistc about it. I probably won't file for another year or two as I'm saving my money and reminding my b/f everyday to continue working and saving as well (I'm not paying for everything on my own lol)

Once again, thanks to all u Veterans

Hello All,

I'm back to the questioning again. Since my last visit to Jamaica, I have been proposed to. Didn't think it would happen this fast, but I knew it would happen. Guess I wasn't jumping the gun afterall when I began writing on here, asking all kinds of questions.

Well now I am trying to figure out which process is best for Evan and I. I see I can either go for the K1 and not get married til after this one arrives, or I can do the K3 and get married prior.

Questions:

If i do the K3, which is stated as having the same processing times as the K1, what would be my advantage over the K1 exactly.

Does the K3 allow Evan to travel back Jamaica for visits, before we adjust status?

If I do the K1, when exactly will Evan be able to travel back to Jamaica?

I wonder about the travel back to JA so much because, I know this will be a huge adjustment for him to come to the states and I would like to know that we have the option to go back to Jamaica for a family visit every once in awhile. I would hate to get him here on the wrong visa and he becomes home sick without an option to visit home for a bit.

I also noticed that the K3 visa requires a I-129F AND a I-130 to process. Is this correct? Seems like a lot of money. Why would I need the I-129F if he is my spouse and not my fiance?

Any info is appreciated. Thanks!

The K1 is the fastest visa, but if you choose to get married in JA then you will have to apply for the CR-1 (I-130) first. Once you get your NOA1 then you can apply for the K3 (I-129f). The K3 was created to reunite familes together so they wouldn't have to wait out the CR1, but lately seems like they both have been running the same time frame.
