How did you move your computer?

Well? What'd you do? Did you pack it in your luggage, just take the hard drive anc carry it in your carry on? Ship it?

The hubster has got to have his pc... ;)

Shipping from Germany shouldn't be too cost-prohibitive. I'd just send it via one of the major shipping companies.

Or, he could buy a laptop, transfer all of his data and then carry it on the plane with him. Just make sure it's a model that will have a US power adaptor available over here. Personally, that's what I would do. Bringing just a hard drive would 1) be suspicious and 2) be very very risky. His stuff will likely be searched. I could almost guarantee that a loose hard drive would be completely wiped by the time he got here.

I'd go the laptop route first, and ship his current computer as a second choice.

Suspicious ? Risky ? Not at all. Yes, you have to pack it properly, and it's best to keep it in your hand baggage. Been there, done that. More than once.

If there is anything really important on the hard drive - make a backup. But that's something we do anyway, don't we ? ;)

I removed the entire contents of my CPU... motherboard, 4 harddrives, dvd drive, floppydrive, video card, 2 soundcards wrapped them all in anti-static bags and packed them all inside my case... Flat panel monitor was wrapped in bubblewrap and was also in my case.

When I got to the States all I did was buy a new computer case and powerpack and rebuilt it.... works fine and none of the hard drives had any problems....

Maybe I have less faith in the airlines than I should. I've had things shuffled around in my bags on a few of my flights, so I'm extra paranoid. I had a hard drive (I was an I.T. contractor) in an anti-static bag, in foam made for shipping hard drives tucked away in my bag. I didn't put it in carry-on though, because the counter person for the airline said not to. When I got my bag home and opened it up, the hard drive was out of its' bag and rolling around in my luggage. Likewise, there were 30+ sticks of ram un-bagged, and a P4 processor with all of the pins smashed flat. Don't ask me why they took the CPU out of it's tray, but they did. At the time, it was a $300 processor. The airline did nothing about it - said it was my fault for bringing it with me rather than shipping it. That's why I responded the way I did. It was the airline counterperson who told me that a hard drive in carry-on was suspicious. Have no idea why, but that was the reason he gave for making me move all of it to my checked baggage. The memory I could understand, since its' edges are very sharp and could be used as a weapon. Guess I could brain someone with the hard drive.... ???

I shipped my PC by UPS and changed the power supply when it arrived here but didn't bother with the VDU would be cheaper to by another when you get here.

Well as a woman there was no room for anything to move around in my case it was packed full to bursting...

I did not think the airlines were allowed to open your case without you being present.....

They are in the US. If you put one of those little locks on it, they'll cut it off if they want to look in your bag. I gave up on locking my bags.

I shipped my PC by UPS and changed the power supply when it arrived here

You mean you flipped this little "110/220" switch, right ? :)

Bartek

I wish they all HAD that little switch. I work for HP, and only half of the computers we build have the switch. Of course, the computers always seem to come down the line with the switch either on 230V or in the middle somewhere, so I spend a lot of time moving switches to 115V. lol

:o I have no reason not to believe you, but I have never seen a PC that does not have this switch OR does not automatically adjust to either 110V or 220V. And I have seen quite a few...

I used UPS and they screwed things up with customs and it took me several weeks to get it. then they overcharged me for the speakers (they are not worth $750) and then it took several days to reach someone who could remove that charge.

I would now like to express my support for FedEx....

As have I since I owned a computer store before I got into the I.T. contract thing. Believe me....they're out there. About half of the new HPs don't have the switch, nor will the HP US power supplies "adjust" for 230V. It would fry immediately. I carry PowMax power supplies (among others) and only about half of those come with switches. I honestly don't know why manufacturers wouldn't make their power supplies dual voltage....it would let them carry only one SKU for each model. Seems like it would save money....

My fiance is going to move his in bits. He's just bringing his hard drives (master and slave), graphics card and his keyboard/mouse (which he really likes). He's going to build the rest when he gets here.
