It's possible that since morbid obesity is really a problem in the US, moreso than in Europe, we have many more resources for these individuals. We would never have to send a patient to the zoo to get an X-Ray. I know he was morbidly obese but that's just cruel.

It's been done here in the U.S. as well. I recall reading a story about it, but I don't have access to unfiltered internet here so I can't look it up. People that big make up a small proportion of the population. I think it's fairly unreasonable to expect a hospital to purchase extremely expensive equipment to accomodate a small portion of the population.

Really? Wow. :o I never heard that story. Well at least in NY, we have hospitals that specialize in bariatric surgery, and therefore have the resources necessary for heavier individuals. Usually when someone that heavy needs treatment they are either directed to one of those hospitals or transferred to one.

It really is sad though.

When a 5-foot, 275-pound woman found out she had a tumor on her spine, she was told by her local hospital to go the zoo to have a MRI because a regular MRI machine could not hold her weight.

Carolyn Ragan discovered the tumor two years ago and, after the hospital told her she could not use their machine, a medical aid he would help her find a solution.

“So he suggested the Kansas City Zoo,” Ragan said. “I thought, I know I’m big, but I’m not as big as an elephant. And my husband got mad.”

Ragan’s problem was two-fold: She was too heavy for the table and too wide to slide through the opening.

Ragan, who ended up having two surgeries and some paralysis, said she finally found an open MRI machine that held her weight, but it was embarrassing and frustrating.

“They should have machines that fit most everybody,” she said.

That's rediculous, they should have been referred to a hospital in another area or state, before the damn zoo. Geez.
