This is why I believe we need to make sure that in the future, Somali pirates are only captured by Egyptians, Saudi Arabians, and other countries with similar justice systems. If we capture them, we'll give them trials and at most put them in jail.

The Saudis will chop off their hands, feet, and tongue, poke their eyes out, and then send them back to Somalia. That's the kind of thing that will reduce the number of new pirates.

The problem in Somalia is that the pirates are cool. They have money, guns, and probably get the girls. If you read the stories, lots of the pirates are young boys, some as young as 12. They go because they want to be cool, too. If we just let the Saudis take every pirate that's captured and make an example of them and then put them back in the pirate hideouts, it would reduce the appeal.

Public hangings would also work. That is how pirates were dealt with and essentially eliminated in the Atlantic in the 18th century.

At least in the Caribbean piracy flourished because the major world empires at the time (France, Spain and Britain) were fighting over territory in the Americas - and it was possible to make a lot of money smuggling or being paid by the major powers to disrupt trading routes.

It ended as those conflicts drew to a close and the expansion of the British and subsequently the United States navy meant that there was no demand for the services of independent mercenaries.
