Mrs. Dog, quick Brit question for you - did you ship much stuff and if so who did you use?

Gonna post in t'other forum about this but Parcel Monkey quoted me £200 for a single box!! Admittedly a v heavy box but still struck me as a bit rude...

Been at home with the parentals this week going through my stuff in the attic deciding what to take and what not to take...quite tough, as because my parents are separating what I leave behind may not be kept :( it was a good trip down memory lane though and I'm quite a sentimental soul so I'm keeping all my hundreds of photos - even if they make up most of the weight!! My 'my first haircut' certificate with a lock of my hair from Feb 85 was a particular highlight...

Oh and thought you'd like to see a pic of the dress I've bought for me and Jason's blessing here in the UK on August 21st...it's SO girly it practically needs a health warning :D

Hope you're all good lovelies!!

@ Jess : Lovely lovely cute superb little flowery dress :luv:. I love it :luv:

As for the shipping, depends if you are shipping furniture or not, I only took like 1 extra luggage and 2 boxes with me on the plane. American Airlines allows you to have 9 extra luggage of 22kg each with you. You pay 50$ for the first one, and 100$ for each extra one.

My mistake was the boxes, 12 kg each, would have been better if I bought extra cheap luggage to fill them up :(. had to leave over 1000€ of stuff back in france, but oh well, what's done is done.

You can have more info on their website, but it's really cheaper then shipping them via a shipping company (i've been quoted 700$)

Off to the DMV today to see if they can just switch my french driving license to an american one :) without having to drive ;)

Miss Jess (glad to see you survived Glastonbury, that place is not for the faint hearted!) - shipping

I used John Mason as I had furniture - and I wish I hadn't. They are one of the top companies and are not cheap, but as I was travelling the day before my removals because of my dogs and I had to have a friend stay over night at my flat and do the removals for me, I didn't want any hassle for her and I didn't want any cheap cowboys being a total nightmare. £2,400 for the contents of my whole flat, including packing it all.....but that's not what happened.

John Mason contracted out the job without telling me. If they had, I would not have paid so much. So, I was waiting in line at immigration when my phone rang and it was the contracted company asking me how much stuff did I have, cos John Mason hadn't bothered telling them! My friend told me 3 elderly men from Blackpool (still cowboys!) turned up to do the job but had been told they wouldn't have to pack anything! Scathing, emails of complaint being fired off by me to John Mason as we speak.

Naddy - good luck on the driving licence, let me know what happens there. At least you are used to driving on the same side of the road! I am not and am terrified of taking to the roads, and also of getting lost as I live way out in the country, but the sooner I get driving the better as I will be a prisoner in my own home and small town! Not good!

Good luck - I know that in Florida if you have a French license you can swap it straight out for a FL one, so hopefully it'll be the same for you :) (alas, for us Brits, we have to do the full theory and practical tests in the sunshine state - but I'm hoping that as I still have my Florida license that expired in 2008 they might just let me renew it...)

Thanks for the shipping advice both :) Needless to say I won't be using John Mason!!

I don't have any furniture (save a small jewellery chest my bro gave me for my 18th birthday), but my problem is all my childhood stuff. I have hundreds of photos in boxes, as well as things like cards and baby items from when I was small, and as my mum/stepdad are in the middle of divorcing and therefore downsizing to smaller places I've been told that if I don't take it with me its safety can't be guaranteed :(

So this, annoyingly, leaves me with too much weight for excess baggage and not enough for it to be worth a full removals service. I have found somewhere that claims to be able to ship a tea chest and 4 book boxes for £170 though, so it may be doable. My one hope is my dad and stepmum who are knocking about in a massive house just the 2 of them...maybe they can keep my stuff temporarily and I can get it shipped further down the line. Bloody nightmare!!
