I recently bought a new mattress... At my local big mattress store, I asked to see their clearance mattresses, these were just used as floor samples and never slept on... I got a really nice Sealy Euro Pillowtop for $450 (it was $900)... I did not need the box spring as I have a platform bed (I love the storage underneath as the bed lifts up to store blankets and things underneath)....

I'm using a set of Chinese door panels I brought back with me as my headboard.

Very cool idea! Do you have any photos of that?

If you served in the US military in a half shell pup tent sleeping on a rocky field, anything above that would seem comfortable. We had to scrounge wire coat hangers for our bunk beds to keep from sagging on top of the guy below you, mattresses were about 3" thick and kind of bumpy. But those were the good ole days.

Today you have a choice between a twin, standard, queen, king, or a California king sized bed, king size beds are basically two twin sized beds glued together, price is all over the place. Could be perfectly happy sleeping on a camping type air mattress with a sleeping bag, very comfortable, and if you like a very firm mattress, just pump more air into it. We have both a queen and a twin sized mattress, the twin was about 25 bucks, toss it on the floor and get some sheets if you are on a budget.

We have an extra thick California king size in our master suite, the choice of firmness is yours, I personally don't care for those with that so-called NASA foam with memory, get bad dreams, because I get locked in a position and can't turn over if I want, like sleeping in a mud hole, yeah had bad dreams when sleeping in a mud hole.

Box springs are entirely optional, again, it depends on your preference, can get by as cheap as 25 bucks for a twin sized air mattress, or the sky is the limit in terms of the price you want to pay. All kinds of criteria in selecting the bed of your choice. How is this for a criteria if you have other family members living with you, find a bed that doesn't squeak.

Dear Sara,

Yes, please... never buy a used one...

Not worth the money and who knows what kind of creepy crawlies are in it!

Even if it takes a few months of sleeping on the floor to save up, it will be worth it!

Platform beds last longer than bed springs. And, I think platform is much more comfortable as well.

I second that! Nothing better then a platform bed with a nice rock hard mattress. I used to sleep on a platform bed with futon, which was great but.....I had trouble after that sleeping on soft beds to the point where if I was staying at someone's house I'd be on the floor.

Though floors can be nice too, when I first moved back from the UK I slept on the floor for 5 months before I purchased a bed. I actually bought a TV and sofa well before I ever got around to looking at beds.

Ever tried getting rid of a used mattress, even one that was covered since new and stain free? Have to pay through the nose to get rid of the damn thing. This is the other side of the story.

So it's time to buy a new bed and being on my own now I need to figure a few things out. What's the story with beds in America?

Bed buying. What a great topic. Think about how important a bed is. You spend about 1/3 of your life in it. Yet, people tend to skimp out and buy a cheap one. For those that think all beds are about the same and buy the cheapest one on sale, that is a rookie and low end move that costs you. I say this because I WAS one of those. Recently, I bought a mid-grade Tempurpedic Bed, and I love it! It didnt hurt that I bought it during the raging credit and mortgage crisis, and got a 5 year, $75/month no interest loan on it. Whatever Bed you buy, get a good one and pay up until it hurts your wallet just a little bit, 'cause then your back won't be!

ps, we love your crazy, deranged avatar pic!

I would be interested to knowing which beds tend to be the least noisey.

because it has always been me i have never worried about a larger bed but with perviz up coming interview figured it was about time i started looking.............i was shocked at the price sticker.....so i thought ok i will try rent to own for a while .....ha........after seeing the stains on the mattresses decided ewe nope dont want to go that way on tues i will be going to see if i can get credit someplace for a decent mattress and box springs ...........

sara

always buy new. I would never buy a used one, or like you were going to do rent to own.. who knows whos DNA is on that

good luck

well  first time i ever been shopping for my own bed lol took my mom with me she said dont get anything from rent to own until u look at the mattress sure enough i dont want that lol

sara

steer clear of rent-to-own!!!! they are often times very shady with their terms and conditions and interest rates, which can easily be in excess of 100% when converted to an annual percentage rate!!!!

heed the advice of others on this thread - it's better to sleep on the floor for a few months and save the money and pay cash rather than take out a loan. if you're a "gots to have it" kinda person, get a 0% interest loan. with the economy as it is now, there should be someone, somewhere willing to give you those terms.
