So it's time to buy a new bed and being on my own now I need to figure a few things out. What's the story with beds in America? If I remember right back home I go to a store find a bed pay the price (which included tax!!) on the tag and it arrives a few days later with a mattress. Here you pay a small fortune for the frame as that's all it really is then a boxspring? then buy the mattress! Is it just me or did I miss something back home I don't remember having to buy a bed in three bits and I don't remember a simple bed costing 3x the rent! It was just a bed and it normally stated in the advert or on the tag if the mattress was included or if you needed to buy anything else? I also found most don't come with the headboard ok that sometimes happens back home but how can they charge as much for the headboard as they do for the frame! :hehe:

A frame shouldn't cost you much at all. You can get one for about $50. Or you can spend about $100 for a steel frame that precludes the need for box springs and allows you a lot of storage space under the bed. Mattresses generally cost a fortune! But there is a "bed-in-a-box" that I've heard is really comfortable and costs only about $200. As for headboards and footboards, those vary in price. Check out Craigslist or go to a garage sale for one of those. Or get creative. I'm using a set of Chinese door panels I brought back with me as my headboard.

I'm not sure I'd want to buy someone else's mattress, but you can get cheap used frames and boxsprings.

Bed buying. What a great topic. Think about how important a bed is. You spend about 1/3 of your life in it. Yet, people tend to skimp out and buy a cheap one. For those that think all beds are about the same and buy the cheapest one on sale, that is a rookie and low end move that costs you. I say this because I WAS one of those. Recently, I bought a mid-grade Tempurpedic Bed, and I love it! It didnt hurt that I bought it during the raging credit and mortgage crisis, and got a 5 year, $75/month no interest loan on it. Whatever Bed you buy, get a good one and pay up until it hurts your wallet just a little bit, 'cause then your back won't be!

ps, we love your crazy, deranged avatar pic!

I would keep this bed for at least 15 years. The foam is very durable and stays soft and supporting.

You can get a good Tempurpedic for a lot less than that.

Don't know where you are, but sometimes there are mattress outlets, aka Sleepy's where you can get a decent mattress, box spring, frame for $500 or less...

They are not the best quality though in that i don't think they last as long as the sellers claim... but still...

I bought bed+ mattress at Ikea recently.

Queen size bed , including frame+headboard, about $200.

Mattress - about $350.

Total - $550. I managed to bring it home myself, no delivery necessary.

Took me about 2-3 hours to set up the frame.

I absolutely hated my bed in England! No matter how many mattresses I tried I could never find one as comfortable as the one I had at home. I prefer my bed here. I don't care how much it costs. I need comfort.
