Not unless you have a criminal record or a difficult situation. If none of thos then you are good to just send it off.

Not if you don't want to. You know your info the best. But like said above, if you have complications you may want to seek legal advise. Most people on here will tell you not to go with a lawyer. VJ is mostly a DIY site.

For most people, the atty just takes a big fee from you , copies papers that you can fill out , and atty just becomes a middle man that slows down your papers going to USCIS. Dump atty, and use the money for yourself and your girl. Cheers.

I would expand on "difficult situation" to include cases where you're dealing with a particularly tough consulate. In that case, it wouldn't hurt to have your petition reviewed by a qualified attorney with specific experience with that particular consulate. You don't need to actually hire the attorney to handle your case. Just a consultation and advise are enough. Based on his experience, he may spot things in your petition that you could add or change that will improve your chances with the consulate.

Also, remember that advise is often not worth what you pay for it, even when it's free. Paying an attorney or consulting with the "experts" here on VJ is no excuse for not doing your homework. You are the one who will benefit from your success or suffer from your failure, so be prepared to invest a lot of time into making yourself an "expert".

I would expand the circumstances under which one would be wise to secure professional help to include anybody who lacks confidence in their own ability to read carefully, interpret literally and follow detailed instructions, or anybody who knows they tend not to do well with detailed paperwork.
