I have been wondering something, and not sure how to word it to ask correctly. To begin with, we have peititoned for a K1 fiance visa. Once my fiance arrives here, we will marry and file for AOS. Buttt... lets just say for instance, that in 6 months for example, he does not like it here and wished to return home for us to live there. If in 6 months we did this, moved there, would he be able to still apply for US citizenship while living in another country? Would he still be able to travel home with me for visits? I am not sure how this works. Im concerned that if we ever wanted to move back, could we? Could he still obtain his American citizenship while living in another country and be able to travel back and fourth. Or would we have to wait for a year (or more, however long) to travel there before he could come back to the united states freely. Thanks a bunch for your help!!

The short answer to your question is "No" can not get US Citizenship while living outside the US. Some basic requirements are:

  • Have resided as a permanent resident in the United States for at least 5 years or 3 years if you meet all eligibility requirements to file as a spouse of a U.S. citizen
  • Have demonstrated continuous permanent residence
  • Have demonstrated physical presence
