So-AOS time it is. Preliminaries:

- How long do we/can we wait to file for this?

- I know I can apply for a Social Security # with this-can I apply for one beforehand?

- Allowance to leave the country-I ask for this at the same time as sending my AOS stuff, right?

We have a tonne of insane stuff going on in the next month-new vehicle, new place to live, blah blah... hence the questions re: the timing of sending this stuff in.

Thanks!

CONGRATULATIONS!!!!

I don't mean to rain on your parade but if you married less than 90 after you entered the US you might get a bit of hassle by USCIS. You entered the US and to avoid leaving you got hitched, utter BS but that's the way they think. I assume that you entered the US as a visitor (technically B2) and not on any form of visa. The rule is 30 days or less expect to be hassled, 30-60 still likely but maybe not, 60-90 even less likely, 90 or more don't expect to be hassled.

Did you take a look at her timeline before you wrote this?

Oh geez... I got married 6 days after my POE, and the officer that processed my K-1 at the POE even asked when we were tying the knot, and I said 6 days.

I felt really bad about the whole thing but neither spouse was Canadian if that means anything. Somebody, somewhere probably misfiled the documents and no one bothered to check. It took the USCIS employees forever (45 minutes!!!!) before they finally figured out that they could have Mom swear out her FOIA request (for the entries and exits) at their office. At Casper, Mom swore out an affidavit in five minutes, the USCIS folks there knew what they were doing.

Apply for everything right away. The window to apply for the SSN closes 76 days after entry. For further SSN information check out the Working & Traveling Forum

Congratulations on the wedding! :)

Moving from the Canada Forum to AOS.

Thanks everyone!

I entered October 9th on my K-1, and (as stated) got married on the 27th here in Austin.

So, ciphering through the replies, I'll do the I-194 form, with passport in hand, and go from there (new address included--thanks for pointing that out!!). Now to hunt for the form :)

As far as the AOS stuff, that has to happen in January-it's just how it is....

p.s. Thank for the move, K-I posted in a pseudo careless hurry.. hehe

As soon as you get the marriage license, take it, yer passport, and file for the SSC - it'll get issued in your married name. If you don't care one way or the other about having your married name on the SSC, go to the SSA on Monday and apply.

There's no hard/fast rule for WHEN to file the AOS package - most assume (wrongly ) that it must be done before the I-94 expires, 90 days from POE date. I'd suggest 6 months past the date of marriage is getting a bit 'long in the tooth' - and try, for at least one month after ya get the official marriage license.

Congratulations !!! Did the groom make any arrangements for Shiner Beer ? :D

Not to sound like a repetitive moron, but all I need to bring with me is the marriage license and my passport?

As for actually filing for my SSN-I assume I go to the SSN office in town? bah-I'm so sorry if this is all really to answer.. I just want to make sure I'm reading/comprehending everything correctly.

And no Shiner Darnell--we DID have Magic Hat, though-nomnom!

I heart that site-no offence taken.

re: the arrival/departure form--#######? who keeps that? Mine's always/and was taken away by the border dude @ the airport when I left October 9th on my K1. That said, it says: Form I-551 (includes machine-readable immigrant visa with your unexpired foreign passport) - I'm assuming that's the K-1 sticker in my passport.... ?

Aha-the wonky little piece of paper they staple in there-understood.

On that note, THANK YOU. That and I'm usually a reasonably intelligent girl... this stuff throws me for a loop, though.

Love and thanks (again) to the usual suspects- I can't say that enough....
