Do you have Dental Insurance?

If you don't maybe you should wait until you do.

I am having work done on my teeth at the moment, with insurance hopefully it will cost under $500.

Be careful there is often a yearly spending cap on dental payments with your health insurance. Mine is $750 which can mount up quickly. If I were you I'd get a second opinion on your gnashers. I had a similar experience only to find it was at least a quater of the actual work that needed doing. Don't forget they're out to make money off you first and foremost...

Another option is to have private work done on your teeth in the UK. That is often a lot cheaper and many health insurers will pay it no matter where you have it done. Once you have lived out of the UK for more than 6 months you can't claim any NHS care from them but often their private work is a lot cheaper than the sharks over here.

I worked for a cosmetic dentist, up until a few weeks ago..................what do you need to have done? crowns? is it veneers?

there is a financing option called "care-credit". They will help finance expensive dental work, not sure if that is what you want to do but it may help!

I am soooo glad I saw this topic as I had my first dentist experience yesterday in the US and I came home crying my eyes out wanting to go back to England! I have dental insurance and just wanted to go along for a routine teeth cleaning as I havent experienced any other problems with my teeth. What a terrible experience it was. I was in there for over two hours and by the end of it I felt so shocked and also felt like I had been to a timeshare presentation! I was told I need four fillings, an implant, all my teeth were decaying, I was told I need a cap for a slight chip in my teeth I had never even noticed and dont care about, I was told I needed extensive cleaning which would cost about $600 ... in total, they said I needed about $5000 worth of treatment!!!! I was so upset by it all. They refused to do the routine cleaning that comes with my dental insurance, they said it would be like "putting a bandaid on something that needs stitches"!!! I actually went to the dentist ten months ago before I moved out here and was never told I needed anything else. I have had four fillings in 28 years of being on this earth and then in the space of ten months another dentist tells me I need four more!!! Perlease! They were also saying about wisdom teeth and how I should have them removed ... hell, they aint hurting me so as the saying goes 'If it aint broke then dont try to fix it'. They were also saying that in English water we dont have fluride so it leads to receeding gums and stuff. I always thought my teeth were fine apart from being slightly stained. I know America (especially California) is the land of the vain and its all about having the 'movie star' smile but please, as long as I am in no pain with my teeth and they look normal whats the problem! Was thinking about going over to Mexico to get stuff done as its alot cheaper!

$10,000? Get a second opinion.

"The fact that we are here today to debate raising America’s debt limit is a sign of leadership failure. It is a sign that the U.S. Government can’t pay its own bills. It is a sign that we now depend on ongoing financial assistance from foreign countries to finance our Government’s reckless fiscal policies."

Currently having a root canal done and am having a really joyful time!!! Best of luck is what I can say... am getting all my dental stuff out of the way before touching the USA.

Paul and I met on the Bazaar on the 14th January (he joined my progressive rock forum that day)

July 3rd he flew to England to meet me

We fell in love while he drove all over the place coz I cannot read maps (we were supposed to go to Ingleton - but touched Darlington 4 times, Pierce Bridge 6 times, Scotch Corner twice and Bernard Castle twice and we never did make it to Ingleton)

It has been so long and so much has happened in between...

Arrived in Houston on October 29th 2006

Married 17th November 2006

Lost my father 8th January 2007 (all dates are a blur after this)

Conditional Green Card dated 24th October 2007

I-751 posted on 6th August 2009

Received on 7th August 2009 in VT

Dentistry here is so elusive because much of the treatment is subjective and then you add the term 'cosmetic' to dentistry and then it becomes an experience much like walking onto a used car lot - you're at the mercy of the sleazy car dealer. It didn't used to be this way. I grew up in Arizona and never once had a cavity. Then, 4 years ago I went to a dentist here in So. California and I was told I had 3 cavaties (from so-called 'severe brushing') and I ended up paying about $700 out of pocket. The dentist's office would wait until they had me sitting in the chair and then they'd hand me a clipboard, asking me to sign consent - basically agreeing to whatever the dentists does to my teeth. It's totally unscrupulous and I am now suspicious of all dentists.
