The US is very right wing - certainly compared to what I'm used to (and the UK is hardly "far left"). If you seriously think that the political parties are not right wing enough - its probably time to get yourself an swastika armband and grow a one-inch mustache.

Hitler based his views mostly on the need to have a scapegoat. Germany lost WWI and was not only torn apart by war, but the Treaty of Versailles. Germany was looking for a way to reclaim their lost self-worth and Hitler provided it for them. He claimed the German people were not to blame for their loss, but it was the Jews who secretly caused it. Nothing rallies people faster than shifting the blame to another group.

Because he hated the jews... and incidentally more Christians were killed than jews.

You should get big points in your creative writing classes, but in politics, not so much.

I am not sure what you are trying to convey with the bolded but if you are in any way trying to suggest that it wasn't just the Jewish people that were systematically deprived of every right within the 3rd Reich before being transported, worked to death or simply exectued then that is beyond reasonable. Other groups were targeted, homosexuals, communists, gypsies and the disabled among others, but the main target were the jews. Your attempts to rewrite history are very disturbing in this instance.

I'm not downplaying the Jews. Interesting way to set me up as a Nazi.. That was my point, that it was many many groups that were targeted. I don't see where I said otherwise

I expect whatever source he's quoting (or not) for that has more to do with people being killed in the battlefield, rather than the Final Solution.

That would be my guess. It's a fairly well known fact that more people were killed on the Russian front than anywhere else in terms of direct involvement with the 3rd Reich, but the way he worded it did leave a lot of room for speculation as to what Joe actually was trying to convey. Certainly the racial purity aspect was the driver behind the 'final solution' and you can't get much more ideological than that.

I'm very much more libertarian than republican. Except there are some things I take issue with them as well.

You don't see how saying 'many more christians were killed' down plays the atrocity that was perpetrated systematically against the jewish people?

Joe, if it makes you feel any better, I'm Jewish and I don't think you're a Nazi. In fact, calling you such is insulting to those individuals -- Jew or not -- who suffered during WWII because of the Nazis.

I know you have your own opinion and that may or may not mesh with everyone else. That's fine. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion, just don't expect immediate agreement. That's a rare occurrence on VJ when it comes to ANY subject.

There aren't that many positions - socially you're looking at a more authoritarian government and intrusion into peoples lives, militarily you're looking at interventionism, economically you're looking at de-regulation and privatisation.

It is always possible that a person can alter their opinion as the prevailing circumstances change.

Yes it is.. But he says he loved Reagan.. If his opinion had changed, he wouldn't love him anymore.

I still regard Reagan as one of the top 10-15 Presidents in history. As for Obama, Joe is under the misguided notion that I am lock-step with his policies. The truth is IMO the once proud & strong Republican party is a shadow of it's former self, replaced by a party full of Right Wing nuts who care more about destroying the Democrats than addressing the issues our nation faces. The Obama administration (again IMO) is at least trying to fix the problems. I don't always agree with Obama & I feel that he should focus on 1-3 issues at time instead of trying to fix everything at once (which so far has equaled fixing nothing) but I'll take Obama over a bunch of bitter, angry Right Wing nuts any day.

Again your truth (i.e. perception) of the Republicans & Democrats is very different than my truth (i.e. perception) of them. When I think of Reagan I do think of a Conservative, but the modern day Conservative is quickly developing a negative connotation much like the term "Liberal" has. Times change & therefore political parties change & IMO the Republican party has changed for the worse.

As for Obama he's gets criticism from the Liberals almost as much as the Right, so it's hard to say he is a Liberal.

I don't think the modern conservatives will ever reach the the plateau of negativism that earned the Liberals the disdain that is heaped on them today......Oh, forgive me, the "Progressives" <cough cough>......
