I've been divorced twice. I've got the divorce certificate from the second marriage, but have applied for a copy of the first one. Believe it or not, I put the incorrect date of marriage on the application (some things are best forgotten ;) )...so they returned the application asking if I wanted to do a 5 year search. I agreed, and put the dates to search on the application and sent the required fee. That was about a month ago and I still haven't received anything.

Now here's my reasoning....Why would I even NEED a copy of my first divorce certificate, if in fact I would have had to produce it in order to get the marriage license to get married the second time? (Yes, I did....and no, I have no idea where it is now, which is why I'm applying for a copy.) I know I'm just off on a bit of a rant right now...but really???

I know this is a hypothetical question, but IF for some reason I don't have the first divorce certificate by the time we're ready to file, would I be able to produce it at a future date without slowing down the process too much? Is there some notation I can make on the F-129? Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Again...I know I'm just stressing a bit over this. :P

Yes, you need copies of ALL divorce certificates/decrees.

You would be issued an RFE (request for evidence) and file processing stops until the requested items are submitted.

Why would you ever "need" a copy of your first divorce certificate? Because they have to have it. Sorry! I don't know where you'll be interviewing, but I had to include my first marriage certificate along with the divorce certificate as well in Vancouver. Just fyi. Montreal apparently doesn't require it, but Vancouver does.

USCIS requires it... if you don't have it you will not get past the petition stage

Wait..do you need Marriage certificates AND divorce certificates??? I just provided divorce decrees. Divorce decrees should satisfy the requirement of proof of eligibility to marry.

marriage certificates might be required if it was the document that facillitated a "name change".... For the men it is not usually the case, but for the women it might be an issue...

YMMV

Whew, well I am the guy, the U.S. Citizen, and all I provided to prove my divorces was my divorce decrees. I hope that is enough. I have never changed my name. Ha ha.

We were told we have to have copies of my divorce finals, the last one didn't validate any prior divorces. If they need and and you don't have it they will just put you on missing document hold. We went through that when Claudeth made some mistakes with the police clearance translation.
