Nessa, what I would do if I were you is:

*Try to work extra hours/ work through your lunch/ come in early or do whatever you can whenever you can to show that you are still pulling your weight around the office. Be flexible and discuss with your boss alternative ways you can still get the job done. I bet she would be very impressed if you go to her willing to find a solution that would work for both of you.

*Always have a doctor's note for whenever your baby is sick. If your boss decides to escalate this, then you will have proof that the baby was in fact sick. Politely offer your boss to bring her a doctor's note whenever you have to miss work because your baby is sick.

*Watch out for other attendance occurrences that can add fuel to the fire - such as tardies.

I say give it a chance to work it out with your boss... and make a case for yourself that you are accommodating and flexible with your family situation.

I'd leave the name issue alone because the other issue is much more serious and I'd say concentrate on that now. Maybe something to look into again once this storm has passed?

Saludos,

Caro

I don't think your manager was threatening you. She was making a valid complaint. If someone is missing work and that absence interferes with another person's duties, that quickly becomes a real problem.

Having said that, you have a baby and babies require a lot of attention and time. Missing a few days over the course of a month-and-a-half isn't that bad. If you and your manager are willing to be flexible about your work hours, that might be a good solution. You'd still get your work done, but be able to take care of your child.

Another option is to forgo payment for whatever time you miss UNLESS that time is scheduled, such as a vacation. I don't particularly like this option (and I doubt you do as well), but it might help if your manager isn't willing to bend a little.

I would not talk to HR about this yet. I would approach her in a calm and friendly manner and just address the issue. Not grumpy and emotional, just down to the facts and professional. As it seems your little family depends on your extra income, so I would try to avoid pissing her off by going to HR directly and not seeking a conflict resolving conversation with her beforehand. If she goes on after you seek a solution to the problem with her, then I would certainly approach HR.

I would only mention the missing work/ baby issue. The name issue might be a biggie to you, but I would keep quiet about it. It's a minor issue and you will only get a whole lot of eye rolling for it.
