Volcanic eruptions were responsible for a deadly ice age 450 million years ago, as well as - in an ironic twist - a period of global warming that preceded it, a new study finds.

...

The ancient ice age featured glaciers that covered the South Pole on top of the supercontinent of Gondwana. Two-thirds of all species perished in the frigid climate.

...

Saltzman and his team linked this ice age to the rise of the Appalachian Mountains.

...

Giant volcanoes that formed during the closing of the proto-Atlantic Ocean - known as the Iapetus Ocean - set the stage for the rise of the Appalachians and the ice age that followed.

"Our model shows that these Atlantic volcanoes were spewing carbon into the atmosphere at the same time the Appalachians were removing it," Saltzman said. "For nearly 10 million years, the climate was at a stalemate. Then the eruptions abruptly stopped, and atmospheric carbon levels fell well below what they were in the time before volcanism. That kicked off the ice age."

So, without all this extra carbon, we would be thrown into an ice age? Oh noes! I am stoking the woodstove tonight!

huh. How was there global warming before humans were around to cause it? :(

Was there liberal white guilt before there were humans?

"The fact that we are here today to debate raising America’s debt limit is a sign of leadership failure. It is a sign that the U.S. Government can’t pay its own bills. It is a sign that we now depend on ongoing financial assistance from foreign countries to finance our Government’s reckless fiscal policies."

A long time ago there was an ice age and the only land was a supercontinent in the center of the planet, dinosaurs roamed the land and later went extinct, the supercontinent divided into 7 continents all spaced out across the earth.

And now we are concerned because the earth might get a degree warmer?

Could you imagine what they'd be saying if we still lived on this one giant supercontinent? How many degrees cooler/warmer (cycles) did this planet go through YTD? I'd imagine from ice age to current was a drastic change in degrees! But now a tenth of a degree warmer means we are all doomed.

It seems to me that the period of dinosaurs, ice ages, and drifting continents was just a bit more alarming than what is going on right now...just sayin'

Any respectable engineer would understand the meaning of the concept of reactive climate shift to abrupt levels and drops in atmospheric greenhouse gases. But all these lies fed to you by the liberal science elites are too much!!

Personally I think that silly movie about the day after next week was going through his mind.

Wishing you ten-fold that which you wish upon all others.

I think there have been several.

The latest set of numbers points to not a 3 degree CELSIUS mean gain, but a 6 degree CELSIUS gain. Belittle that if you can, but already the Northern Rockies are seeing dying greenhouse forests due to the 1 degree CELSIUS gain we've seen thus far, among every other place that has seen effects at such a 'modest' change- and that is far from alarmist... its fairly REAL. ;)

Yeah those sun-spots can do some damage sometimes.. Good thing they're minimal now.

But you'd be then giving credence to man-made GW. Careful with what hysteria you peddle.

I didn't say they did damage to the climate.
