I am not able to put my spouse on my work sponsored health insurance.

What are the alternatives? I want her to have medical insurance. Running into all sorts of road blocks.

Why won't they let you put her on your insurance? If it's not too personal that is.

I plan to do one of these for the two or so months before we are married and then she can be added to my work insurance plan:

Immigrant Insurance

Phil (Lockport, near Chicago) and Alla (Lobnya, near Moscow)

As of Dec 7, 2009, now Zero miles apart (literally)!

Not all employers offer "you and your dependents" coverage. Or, possibly he is not yet married to his "spouse" and his employer's coverage only covers married spouses and/or dependent kids.

OP: you can get a short term policy of various kinds. When my wife changed jobs and we were without insurance through her job for the first 90 days, we used such a policy. Got it through Assurant. http://www.assuranthealth.com/corp/ah/

PEOPLE: READ THE APPLICATION FORM INSTRUCTIONS!!!! They have a lot of good information in them! Most of the questions I see on VJ are clearly addressed by the form instructions. Give them a read!! If you are unable to understand the form instructions, I highly recommend hiring someone who does to help you with the process. Our process, from K-1 to Citizenship and U.S. Passport is completed. Good luck with your process.

I am married. My employer doesn't offer family plans.

Well, there you have it.

Assurant isn't available in my state.
There are plenty of other such companies. Google "short term health insurance" and you'll get some stuff come up. Assurant is just one of many such companies.

Good luck!

You are in MASS? It was my understanding everyone in MASS was required to have health insuance and that there were state default plans for this if other coverage is not available? Maybe I misunderstand.

You have a couple of options. First, your employer is not giving you health insurance, a health insurance company is, your employer pays a portion of this for you, maybe all, I do not know. You can contact the carrier directly and ask to add your wife to your plan and pay the premiums yourself. This may allow you the option of waiving pre-existing conditions. Your employer cannot prevent you from adding someone to the policy, they just don't have to handle it or pay for it. It is YOUR policy. This would also give you the benefit of group rates.

Next is to contact the state insurance board and see what's up in MASS.

Beyond that you would just have to contact an insurance agency or broker and find a private plan

You can try to apply for a Commonwealth care/choice insurance through Connector

https://www.mahealthconnector.org/portal/site/connector/

You can also get a private quota from other local insurances like Fallon, Tufts, Harvard Pilgrim and Blue Cross.

Good luck!

unfortunately, not a choice in MA with its mandatory insurance policy

Gary had some good advice. Many insurance plans have open enrollment periods, so you might not be able to add her until this time. But, Gary is correct that your employer is not the one you need to contact but the insurance carrier. However, if there is a significant number of years between your age and your wife's, then consider getting a policy just for her. It could be more cost effective.

I make her wear a surgical mask and wrap her in bubble wrap before she leaves the house. :D

It must already be a "right" like the one we're all going to get soon. Funny how this is going to be a "right" we're all going to have to pay for. I haven't decided exactly how I'm going to deal with this new "right" and the cost associated with it, but one thing's for sure - I'm about as happy with this "right" as I am with my "security" from the Patriot Act.

I'm pretty sure you can still be uninsured. While technically illegal, I bet people are doing it.

Not a bad idea.

I've just told my wife that if she wants health insurance, she's more than welcome to pay for it herself.

slim, yes, you can stay uninsured in MA and then face tax penalties.

What's really funny about all this stuff is those who don't pay taxes are the ones who are being "protected" by the govt.'s healthcare scam.
