Well maybe not completely denied but to the point that I am so beyond crushed, I had been waiting for so long to get approved for a GC and now this... I wanted to go back to school and get a new career, so I told my husband that I wanted to join one of those 8 month career training programs at the local UEI college. I had finally convinced him that this was a good thing and we was going to accompany me to see the campus and etc. Sooo, yesterday we finally went to the admissions office, passed weirdest multiple choice test I have ever taken, and had gotten the recommendation letter from admissions. That same day they sent us to financial planning, where the lady that helped us had said that my husband was not going to be needed for the loan etc etc etc.. after leaving the school satisfied with the results and a light of hope that I might be able to join school, we went home and started filling out the paperwork, when I realized that the nice lady (now not so nice) had lied to us, or let's say not laid but did give us the wrong information. So, I wanted to make sure I was right or have the right hunch about this and right I was, my husband income tax was going to be counted and he was going to be a major brownie point towards me getting a grant or any type of loan.

Today, we met with the financial planning lady (another one not the same one) and finished filling out parts where I had questions, she submitted everything, income tax and my income letter. After a few minutes of waiting she said "Well, you don't qualify for a grant. He made too much money for just the two of you. (like we did not know that already) The total for the program is $14,000.00 you can get two loans one for 3000 and the other one for 6000 leaving a balance of 5000 which of that you have to make a 25% upfront payment, and the rest will be monthly payments of 500. ( that is my face when she said that)

The way I see it I am actually paying the 14000 myself, where is the aid at???? or is this is, postponing the payments of the 14000 until they give me a diploma. Now, I think the school is made for people who don't have money or have really bad financial problems what about the rest. I have no idea of what to do, because yeah he made too much money but only the bank and god, well maybe not the bank but god does know for sure where all that money went.

I am so depressed I can't get a job, can't go to school, tired of listening to my mother in law yell all the time, my husband is having problems with work (being laid off on and off)

Some one PLEASE give me some words of wisdom or encouragement at least. :help:

Sorry about yer plight.

IMO - financial aid computation is just as convoluted as applying for a greencard.

HOWEVER, the data you needed, to learn about 'income levels' , was freely posted on the US Department of Education Websites, and also on FAFSA websites.

14000 seems a lot, even for an 8 month program.

I would suggest something else - go to a 2 year community college, and find one with the same 'knowledge tracks' as the UEI program. Sure, this will mean a 2 year committment instead of 8 months, but it should COST LESS, and you get some other education in other stuff as well.

BUT - you have a LARGER ISSUE that no one has mentioned to you -

and that's yer RESIDENCY STATUS FOR EDUCATIONAL PURPOSES.

Some places will view you as an international student, and charge the appropriate FEES (which are WAY WAY WAY HIGH ).

or

Some places will view you as an out-of-state student, the fees are still high.

I suggest you map out , on paper and a calender - just what it will take for you to be considered a 'local resident for tuition purposes'. Usually, this means one year of residency in the school's zone or area.

Call around to the various community colleges and universities in your area - get the admissions office, and ASK what the 'length of local residency must be to get local resident tuition rates'. Keep a chart of all of this on your paper notes, build it as you make the calls.

I'd be interested to know the results - so when yer finished compiling all of this data - hey - report back ?

Warmest Regards...

Sometimes my language usage seems confusing - please feel free to 'read it twice', just in case !

yep, voting for community college. You can take a few classes and see if its where you really want ot be. Most community colleges offer a plethora of courses/degrees and certificates at a fraction of the cost of other schools. Maybe you can get a part time job or even ask about jobs on campus there too.

Good Luck!

Timeline: 13 month long journey from filing to visa in hand

If you were lucky and got an approval and reunion with your loved one rather quickly; Please refrain from telling people who waited 6+ months just to get out of a service center to "chill out" or to "stop whining" It's insensitive, and unecessary. Once you walk a mile in their shoes you will understand and be heard.

Thanks!

Yes but like I said, colleges offer certificate programs that aren't two years long. Check out what you want to study and see which local school has something. And since it sounds like you already have college credits, transfer them and use it, so it wouldn't be two years and save money. 14k is pretty high. Plus, if you don't like to go to class, take the online classes (if they're offered).
