How to adapt faster to this new life

Well, I'm just married and I've been here for one month. I haven't found a job yet and the truth is the wait is killing me. I used to have a very busy life style in my home country and I truly need some ideas on what to do to help me adapt to this new life.

I do remember I once read here there was a website where I could meet people in my area with the same interests I have but I do not seem to find that now. Any suggestions?????

Thanks!

An excellent diversion is to administer frequent "calzoncillo chinos" and to escape receiving them. :) Seriously, others here will be of more help than I, and they will respond.

06-04-2007 = TSC stamps postal return-receipt for I-129f.

06-11-2007 = NOA1 date (unknown to me).

07-20-2007 = Phoned Immigration Officer; got WAC#; where's NOA1?

09-25-2007 = Touch (first-ever).

09-28-2007 = NOA1, 23 days after their 45-day promise to send it (grrrr).

10-20 & 11-14-2007 = Phoned ImmOffs; "still pending."

12-11-2007 = 180 days; file is "between workstations, may be early Jan."; touches 12/11 & 12/12.

12-18-2007 = Call; file is with Division 9 ofcr. (bckgrnd check); e-prompt to shake it; touch.

12-19-2007 = NOA2 by e-mail & web, dated 12-18-07 (187 days; 201 per VJ); in mail 12/24/07.

01-09-2008 = File from USCIS to NVC, 1-4-08; NVC creates file, 1/15/08; to consulate 1/16/08.

01-23-2008 = Consulate gets file; outdated Packet 4 mailed to fiancee 1/27/08; rec'd 3/3/08.

04-29-2008 = Fiancee's 4-min. consular interview, 8:30 a.m.; much evidence brought but not allowed to be presented (consul: "More proof! Second interview! Bring your fiance!").

05-05-2008 = Infuriating $12 call to non-English-speaking consulate appointment-setter.

05-06-2008 = Better $12 call to English-speaker; "joint" interview date 6/30/08 (my selection).

06-30-2008 = Stokes Interrogations w/Ecuadorian (not USC); "wait 2 weeks; we'll mail her."

07-2008 = Daily calls to DOS: "currently processing"; 8/05 = Phoned consulate, got Section Chief; wrote him.

08-07-08 = E-mail from consulate, promising to issue visa "as soon as we get her passport" (on 8/12, per DHL).

08-27-08 = Phoned consulate (they "couldn't find" our file); visa DHL'd 8/28; in hand 9/1; through POE on 10/9 with NO hassles(!).

then why reply??

anyway, meetup.com is good, volunteering is also great ( i dont do it because i cant drive over here yet) studying for your drivers license amazing, er, starting a class, or degree course or what not, these are options.

the waiting part of this process, is part of this process, take a deep breath, better still take up an exercise class, yoga etc and relax. its definately not an easy path, think of it as an extended vacation, remember how stressed you were getting over here all the stuff you had to do, you deserve it.

Go see where you live like a tourist would, I go to museums, local markets, drink beer and cocktails in the afternoon, read books that i normally wouldnt get a chance to. the hardest part is not having your mates, thats one thing i cant help you with, maybe doing some of these things will help you meet folk.

all the best in your adjusting..

xx

Ditto, not having my friends is the hardest part of everything.

I've had moments where I want to pound my head into the wall, sure. But they pass when I keep myself busy and thinking positive. For example, my husband is working 14 hours a day for the nexy three days straight, so I basically won't get to see him for 3 days, and I'm on my own for that time. So we planned ahead, and here are the things I can do to pass the time:

Bake cupcakes from scratch.

Walk to the local library and sign up and take books home.

Read an old book that I didn't have time to read in the UK.

Take the dog out.

Read the driving manual to prepare for my written test.

Play a new game on the Playstation.

Search online for some class/job options for when my EAD comes through.

Talk to my British friends on the phone.

:D

Because others will indeed come along (some have, including you), and the OP needed an early lift (& possible laugh). There is at least one VERY long, thorough thread, I believe in this same forum, about adapting. Look for it and bump it, si man.

Thank you guys!!!! It is good to know I'm not the only one going through this process. I'll try to get on that site to make friends in my area and, of course, will follow your advise.
