Hi, I've posted this question elsewhere and haven't gotten a single response, maybe I posted it on the wrong forum? I am applying for a Greencard, My husband (USC) is not working, so we will use a cosponsor, my uncle. My uncle is a LPR, and would like to apply for citizenship next week, the same time I will be submitting my forms. Question is, will his position as our cosponsor affect his application for citizenship? And how much should he be making, therefore, to show he can support us (I have looked at i864p, and I just dont know how to convert all those %'s into actual figures, help?)?

The I-864P does not require you to calculate any percentages.

You would look for the sponsor's household size and then find the minimum required income amount for that household size to the right of that number.

Reading the instructions for the I-864 will tell you that the sponsor's income must be at least 125% of the amount for their household size shown on their I-864.

Thanks for your response. This conversion of income to 125% above poverty level is what I don't quite get. OK say for instance he makes 25k a year, he lives alone. is his household size going to be 1 (for himself) or 2 (for him and me), or 3 (for him, my husband and I)? And after determining what he would write as his total household size, lets say its 2, whats would 125% above poverty line be exactly? I'm really bad at math, when I tried to calculate 19k multiplied by 125, I came up with a little over 2million! I'm sure that's not what they mean.

Also, any info on what would happen to his application for citizenship as a result of all this?

Thanks

See Form I-864P for poverty guidelines. You dont need to multiply anything.

Hi Cupidkitt,

Umm..Correct me if I'm wrong, but don't co-sponsors (and sponsors) have to be US Citizens in order to be a co-sponsor?

Likewise, I used a co-sponsor in my immigration case before (I-485/AOS), and for that, they required the co-sponsor to be a US Citizen, and to submit proof of such (US Birth Certificate, Passport, etc.). So your LPR uncle, as much money as they may have, cannot be a co-sponsor in your case, unless they become a US Citizen first.

The US Citizenship process is currently taking 4-5 months to complete. So if you want your uncle to be a co-sponsor, they will have to go through this, and as a result, you will have to delay your application for a green card for awhile until they complete the US Citizenship process. On the other hand, if you cannot wait that long for your uncle to be a citizen, then I suggest you find another co-sponsor for your case.

As for the income guidelines, you will have to calculate that based on 1) household size (your sponsor's household plus your co-sponsor's household) and on 2) income levels based on these household sizes. The incomes have to be 125% above the poverty level, and the exact numbers regarding such is on the I-864p.

Hope this helps. Good luck on the rest of your journey too.

Ant

Consider yourself corrected. For further edification, read the instructions for the I-485 regarding who can be a sponsor.

As for the income guidelines, you will have to calculate that based on 1) household size (your sponsor's household plus your co-sponsor's household) and on 2) income levels based on these household sizes. The incomes have to be 125% above the poverty level, and the exact numbers regarding such is on the I-864p.

In both cases the household size will be 2.

Lol...ok..I stand corrected then..It's been awhile (a few years ago) since I was at that beginning stage of the immigration game of getting a green card....and they probably updated the forms since then..good to know that co-sponsors nowadays don't have to be US citizens, from what was mentioned....

On that note...since this is mainly a green card sponsor/co-sponsor (not a citizenship issue)...to the vj moderators...can you move this message thread from the citizenship forums to a more appropriate vj forum, so the OP can get more help there too...thanks...

As for the household sizes...so far from what the OP posted so far, 2+2 seems right...however, household size also depends too if the sponsor and/or co-sponsor have other people in their household....so add the numbers up accordingly...

By the way, the sponsor has to fill out an I-864, and the co-sponsor has to fill out a separate I-864 too...
