Yes, it could matter where you live.... My wife adopted a middle name... Minnesota allows it....

YMMV

thank you for the reply, this is very interesting! did she adopt the name when she filled out the marriage license or was it at a later point?

does anyone know where I can find out if washington allows it?

I did it in Texas! Switched my maiden name to my middle name, and took my husbands name as my last name. I first did it at the SSA office before changing it on my d/l because DMV uses the SSA's database to verify name changes.

thanks for the reply! i was thinking of a brand new name though, such as Nina or Nancy, not keeping a name I already have. this is why i am wondering if it will be a problem or if i can just add it to my marriage license...

Depends on your state. MOST states allow any combination of the maiden and married names at the very least. Check wth your state's DMV.

i could not find out anything on the dmv for washington, it doesn't mention this. i meant a brand new middle name though, not a combination of something already exisiting. has anyone done this and knows if it is possible in washington without having to go to court?
