MARTINSVILLE, Va. (AP) -- ESPN broadcaster Bob Griese apologized twice Saturday for a remark he made about NASCAR driver Juan Pablo Montoya while announcing the Minnesota-Ohio State game.

During the broadcast, ESPN ran a graphic listing the top five drivers in NASCAR's Chase for the championship points race. Fellow analyst Chris Spielman asked where was Montoya, who is Colombian. Griese replied that he was "out having a taco."

As the game was wrapping up, Griese, the Pro Football Hall of Famer and former Miami Dolphins quarterback, apologized for the remark and said that Montoya is one of the best drivers in NASCAR.

At halftime of ESPN's coverage of Florida-Mississippi State, Griese apologized again.

"Earlier today on our game I made an offensive comment regarding Juan Pablo Montoya as part of a NASCAR promo. It was regrettable and I should not have said it. I really enjoy NASCAR and I follow it closely and would like to take this opportunity to apologize to Juan, NASCAR and everyone else who heard my comment," he said.

In a statement, ESPN called the remark "inappropriate."

"ESPN has spoken to Bob and he understands that his comment was uncalled for," the statement said.

What an idiot....

And NASCAR wonders sometimes why it has the reputation it does... I'm a huge fan of this driver and some people get so mad at him they're like "Go back to Mexico illegal drug smuggler!"...DOH! #######???..They just jealous he's beating the "good ol boys"...

Though not the driver I chose, montoya gave my wife (Colombian) someone to cheer for when we went to the Dover race a couple years ago. She would love to go again.

Slowely converting her to my redneck ways.

Love NASCAR!

Besides, he was out getting an arrepa (sp?) not a taco!

she's got something to look forward to then. not this year...maybe in the next 2-3 Jaun will win the championship. he is an amazing driver & he has a 'F-U its mine attitude' which is very much needed, to have success in nascar. his team has come together nicely & its only a matter of time.

NASCAR ... the favorite past time of the great unwashed.

thats why we do it outside.

I hate Columbians. I'm alright with Colombians.

He should have stuck with F-1 although more power to him.

F-1 isn't ready for him yet. He wasn't an asskissing conformist.

He actually started in F-1 racing. :)

Wishing you ten-fold that which you wish upon all others.

I know. I should have said F=1 wasn't ready for him yet. My grammar is getting more and more like eric's each day.

the comments defending him were the things that left me  they were saying 'it's not racist, it's just not PC'.. whatever, it's racist, and quite ignorant.. some people were saying 'what's wrong? All Hispanics eat tacos! (yeah...we all do)..

gosh.. ignorance can be quite amazing

thats because its not racist, its stupid!!! Considering his line of work and the overbearing senitivity that exists here is in america it leaves me suprised he would say such a thing...that said how the hell do people(usualy mexicans) justify being offended over something so stupid. Do all mexicans eat tacos, no of course not but its fair to say that theres no shortage of taco guzzling Mexicans. I always tease my wife about her love for karoke and how its the filipina in her coming out, she doesnt get offended because she knows its in good humor and I care for her. I dont know this guy but from this statement alone there is no way on Gods green earth that I could call this a racist comment.
