Washington University protest flyer

Six African American seniors from Washington University in St. Louis filed a civil rights complaint with the Illinois attorney general's office against Mother's Night Club Original bar after allegedly being denied entry to the club. Students claim they were told it was due to their failure to comply with the bar's "baggy jeans" policy; however, white students who had already been admitted came out to demonstrate that their jeans were more "baggy".

One of the students denied admission was Senior Class Treasurer Regis Murayi who helped organize the Chicago class trip for 200 seniors and negotiated a $25 all-you-can-drink package with the bar in advance. Another senior already allowed into the club, traded pants with Murayi and still got back into the club while Murayi was denied. Murayi and his friends even offered to change pants but claims the bar manager still refused entry.

One student claimed that Mother's saw a group of predominantly black men and felt threatened. Bar representatives told the Chicago Tribune that it was security concerns, not racism, that led to their decision to not let the group of men inside and said gang violence was common nearby, pointing out in the security video two men in the group wearing backward ball caps.

ever heard " WE RESERVE THE RIGHT TO REFUSE "..... well this fits that category!!!!!

Maybe it does. Maybe it doesn't.

They have a right to refuse based on attire. They do not, being a place of public accommodation, have a right to refuse based on race.

FindLaw: Federal law prohibits privately owned facilities that offer food, lodging, gasoline or entertainment to the public from discriminating on the basis of race, color, religion, or national origin.

Boo hoo! Boo hoo! A less deserving "right" would be hard to come by.

Rights are rights, whether we deserve them or not :)

That said, it is amusing (but unsurprising) how you surmised these black men are 'undeserving' based on so little information beyond the fact that they're black :)

You supplied the "information" as a means to race bait, so don't be snarky on top of that. There's no right to wear baggy pants to an establishment, no matter what color you are, so, no, the idea of a right to do this is silly.

I agree, do not care what color, I would not admit anyone with baggy pants. They need to seek out an establishment with the same non conformist attitude.

I don't even hang around many people who wear baggy pants and I don't think the pants in the pictures are very baggy. The guy on the left of the picture looks dressed normal to me for his age. He is wearing a nice jacket in my opinion too. I think it's cool that white students came out to show how their own pants were more baggy yet they got in. Do people only hang around tight pants polo shirt wearing golfers or something? Geez. But what kind of name is Mother's Night Club Original bar?? lol

Hey I was refused entrance in a bar simply because I was in the Marine Corps at the time.

The guy said Marines tend to get in more fights which cost him money and possibly his Liq-license.

Did I like it? No, actually I was really pissed and thought about doing something really stupid but I was on foot... and that might have hamper my get-away :)

Later on I recognized it was "his" bar.
