Even before that there was resentment of Jamaican immigrants after WW2, its pretty much a universal thing whenever there is an influx of people from a particular region.

At the moment, the target of choice is Eastern Europeans.

Yes I remember on the news there being huge problems with eastern europeans coming to the UK to work. For some reason I remember Bulgaria and Poland being the biggest countries to cause complaints.

It used to be asylum seekers from the Bosnian war that people used to get up in arms about - it wasn't that there were so many of them, but rather that the government decided to house them all in the same towns - usually B&Bs in seaside resort towns during the off-season. Changed the ethnic character of some of those places almost overnight.

These days it has a lot more to do with the EU rules that allow EU citizens to live and work in any EU country.

You're absolutely right. Another reason that it is such a sensitive issue today in America is because of our culture. Racism and prejudice exist in EVERY culture, but some cultures have a habit of not talking about such things openly. In my husbands country, white European-looking Peruvians are treated with much more respect, usually are more wealthy, and have better opportunities available to them than the decendants of the indigenous population. These people usually hold domestic jobs, or jobs with low wages and live a completely different lifestyle than their counterparts. There is blatant racism against this population, however it is so deeply rooted in their history that it is seen, not heard.
