So me (usa) and my husband (uk) are going to visit his family end of november. he received his green card last week and i have already sent out my passport to be corrected to my new last name. so we will be all set with papers.

my question is...when we get off the plane in manchester, do we go to the visitors line (usa) or the uk line? i mean do i stick in my usa line and he goes in his uk line or now that he has his green card does he go in the 'usa' line with me??

and for when we go back to chicago...does he go in the visitors line or since he has his greencard does he go in the usa line

thanks for your answers,

skparker

Hi, I faced the same question with my wife (USC). An immigration officer (in US) told us that we should always stick together. So when you go to the States you should both go together on the US citizen/resident line.

I would imagine the same should apply when going to GB.

Enjoy the trip!

Both of you go to the shortest and fastest moving line.

when you get to the uk i believe you would have to split up, as he is a british citizen; however on ereentering the usa he should go to the us line, because he is a permanent resident, so at least then you will be together.

You will have to split at the UK border, your husband has a UK passport and should the UK/EU/EEA passport line and you'll have to join the the all other passports line. The green card is only relevant to US residency, so it won't have any bearing on UK immigration. All that aside, the UK border officers are pretty easy going and I can't imagine it being an issue if your husband joined you in the other passports line.

You can go to either. I would suggest the short line, if there ever is such a thing.

edit:

sorry, thought you menat when re-entering US. He is a UK citizen, I would imagine he goes to the UK line. Though if it is like the US, he would also be able to go with you in the visitors line

When going to the UK, both join the non-UK/EU/EEA line. British Customs don't have a problem with UK passport holders using the other line, it's just slower.

When returning to the US, use the US citizens line.

I'm in this same position, and every time I go to the UK I get hassled and held. Would taking my husband (UKC) in the non uk line cause a problem or make things easier?

Also do I have to change my name on my passport or can I just bring my marriage certificate?

Thanks.
