Question about Passport

Hey everyone, I've got a question about changing my name on my passport. I am the USC and I've changed my name to my married name on everything already except my passport. I know that we both need to bring our passports to the interview and as you can tell from my timeline we've only recently filed my husband's AOS. My question is, do you think I have enough time to mail everything in to change my name on my passport before my interview is scheduled? I know that if everything goes smoothly the passport should only take about 4 weeks but I'm nervous about the what if's, what if it gets lost or held up, etc? Should I wait to change my name on it until after the interview? Or...is it possible that I can walk into a Post Office and fill out the documents in person so I won't have to mail in my passport? (I'm not sure on this since it's not my first time applying).

Just to clarify-does your married name show up on the AOS/I-130 forms or your maiden name?

Did you send a copy of your passport already with these applications?

Yes I used my married name for all the forms. I don't believe I had to send in my passport for anything since I am the USC.

I think either way-changing it or not changing it - you will be fine.

You do have enough time to change your name on your passport if you want to. The only time you need your passport is at the interview. My husband as a USC brought both his passport and Driver's license at the interview.

If you do not change your name on your passport-it will be ok again. At the interview you will have a copy of your marriage license anyway to prove your name change.

I had same situation.

My wife is USC and chaged her name by marriage.

We used her new last name for all forms.

We submitted copy of her passport and naturalization certificate

with her maiden name as proof of USC.

Before interview we didn't change her name on passportt,

because we got interview letter.

We didn't have any problem at all during the whole process.

There was NO RFE nor no question about name change.

In the I-130 Instruction

If either you or the person you are filing for is using a name other than shown on the relevant documents, you must file your petition with copies of the legal documents that effected the change, such as a marriage certificate, adoption decree or court order.

So I think there is no problem in your case.

Thanks for the replies! :thumbs: I just I will leave it then and not take a chance. I would hate to, by chance, get an interview letter and not have the passport back in time

I think you can take your birth certificate and driver license to the interview. As the birth certificate would prove citizenship. And Driver license would prove who you are.

My husband (USC) still has to apply for a passport (our next job after we've filed all the AOS paperwork!)

He's never been outside US, Canada, Mexico etc... He's never needed one before, we're applying so he can visit - England where i'm from next year :star:

From what we've read for the interview they just require proof of citizenship & photo id if the citizenship document doesn't do that. I think birth certificate works plus a government photo id to match names etc...

That's great, thanks for the input! :star: I might bring it just in case but I will be bringing basically every paper we own :lol: Never know what they will want!
