Four decades (plus a couple of months) after hundreds of thousands descended on Max Yasgur’s farm in upstate New York for what has become one of the most iconic music festivals ever, Golden Gate Park hosts an anniversary celebration of Woodstock that features many luminaries from that bygone era. Planned by the same group that presented the huge 2005 memorial concert tribute to psychedelic founding father and pioneering promoter Chet Helms and the 2007 Summer of Love anniversary, the free show is sure to draw thousands to Speedway Meadow Sunday.

Among the bigger names participating include Doors keyboardist Ray Manzarek, who brings his regular collaborator poet Michael McClure to the stage; songwriter and vocal anti-war activist Country Joe McDonald (his onetime partner Barry “The Fish” Melton also performs, though not at the same time); Greg Allman collaborators the Alameda All-Stars performing with hard-rock guitar giant Leslie West and former Moody Blues/Wings guitarist Denny Laine, SF rock favorites Jefferson Starship, the Original Lowrider Band featuring onetime War harmonica player Lee Oskar; Sly and the Family Stone alumni Greg Errico, Jerry Martini, Cynthia Robinson; Lydia Pense and Cold Blood; renowned local guitar great Harvey Mandel and his Snake Band, and a Jimi Hendrix tribute led by drummer Narada Michael Walden.

Besides the live music from the stage, figures from the era such as Woodstock legends Artie Kornfeld and Wavy Gravy, KFOG personality Scoop Nisker, former SF DA Terrance Hallinan, marijuana legalization advocates Richard Eastman and Dennis Peron, Rolling Stone writer/editor Ben Fong -Torres and Black Panther Party member David Hilliard will be speaking between acts.

Many of the 500,000 attendees at Woodstock experimented with drugs during the 1969 music festival. When hundreds of people got sick at the festival it was blamed on poison acid tablets. To calm the crowd an announcement was made that said “The acid’s not poison. It’s just badly manufactured acid. You are not going to die.”

***

“Turn on, Tune in, Drop Out” became a motto for hippies after it was first said by a former Harvard professor. Do you know who said it? See answer at end.

***

The Mamas and the Papas sang the hit song “San Francisco (Be Sure to Wear Flowers in Your Hair)” in 1967.

***

Famous hippie Hugh Romney (born 1936), better known as Wavy Gravy, came to fame as the official clown at Grateful Dead concerts.

***

Ben & Jerry’s has an ice cream flavor that is a tribute the hippie generation. Wavy Gravy ice cream has caramel and nut ice cream mixed with fudge and almonds.

***

Some of the ice cream flavors that Ben & Jerry’s Ice Cream has discontinued are Cantaloupe, Monkey Wrench, Holy Cannoli and Sweet Potato Pie.

***

Cantaloupe derives its name from its origins in Italy. In the 1600s cantaloupe was grown in the pope’s gardens at his summer residence in Cantalupo, Italy.

Answer: Timothy Leary (1920-1996). Leary was a psychologist who researched the effects of mind-altering drugs. While he was a professor at Harvard in the early 1960s, Leary had volunteer grad students take LSD so he could study their reactions. The unorthodox experiment got him fired in 1963. Leary wrote the book “The Psychedelic Experience” in 1964.

0ne of my best friends, now deceased, was friends with Tim Leary and Alan Ginsburg.

Don't just open your mouth and prove yourself a fool....put it in writing.

It gets harder the more you know. Because the more you find out, the uglier everything seems.

I was a big fan of Psychic TV in the 80s, when I met Timothy Leary at their "Interactive Discussion" in L.A. the first night of the L.A. Riots.

Peace to All creatures great and small............................................

But when we turn to the Hebrew literature, we do not find such jokes about the donkey. Rather the animal is known for its strength and its loyalty to its master (Genesis 49:14; Numbers 22:30).
