Why are people freaking out on the flu?

I hadn't gotten the flu yet. Heck, I haven't been sick since the 7th grade. The last time I was sick was from diarheaa. People are calling in sick, and stuff.

H1N1 worries. Cambodia handle tainted pork all the time. Heck, the Cambodia pork sausage is raw pork that I eat all the time. Ever since the H1N1, I still did not stop contaminating myself and my stomach from those raw pork sausage.

The CDC said there's 1000 deaths so far in the US from H1N1. But, am I scared? No.

So many people in NE has been diagnosed with H1N1. Am I worried? No. What's the big deal. I also checked the H1N1 flu statistic. Cambodia has 0 death. You'd think a third world country would have problem with health, but, it's exactly the opposite.

Apparently my city got a new case of it and they're treating the patient like he's radio active.

He's quarantined and there's a huge warning sign on the door.

People are just taking this and blowing it up.

It's just a flu strain.

Haven't seen any deaths on my ICU rotation but LOTS of younger-ish kids on vents because of swine flu. Pre-existing asthma is a huge no-no.

Niels -- are you being sarcastic or something? Pork =/= swine flu. I think my sarcasm meter is just off.

I havn't been in a hospital for like 10+ years, so I'm not sure if that's strange or not.

Sounds like it isn't.

It's not. So I don't think anything is being blown up by the media. They're handling it just like they handle ALL possible flu infections. (Yeah, possible. Runny nose? That's full droplet precautions for your nurse. ZOMG.)

H1N1 is actually milder than normal 'flu. People are getting infected cause people are rushing to the hospitals with the bug, and then spreading it to people with low immune systems who are already in the hospital for something else.

Stay home. Drink fluids. Stop bloody panicking.

My daughter came down with H1N1, confirmed. It was bad, and got much worse in just 24 hours. She was having trouble breathing, and temp of 103 and climbing. Medical attention sought at that point.

Tamiflu, Tylenol, and cough syrup, and she is already on the mend. No fever since late this morning without taking Tylenol.

For some swine flu is pretty horrific, but definitely a lot of hype going on. Don't panic, deal with the symptoms as you would any type of flu, but seek attention when breathing problems are presented, or fever reaches dangerous levels despite using Tylenol or ibuprofen.

For most people who get it, it won't be bad. What they are saying is that the younger children who have not been exposed to any similar variation of the flu, pregnant women whose immune system may be weakened due to the effects of pregnancy (the body weakens the immune system so the mom does not see the baby as a foreign body), or those with pulmonary or immune system issues, will probably be at greatest risk. The risk is not even the flu, but the secondary bacterial infections that develop like pneumonia because of the flu.

(Notice most of the deaths are not the elderly like a typical flu strain, because they have been exposed to a similar strain when young.)

Wife tested positive for H1N1, exposed to a whole bunch of kids with it even by taking preventive means, sure I have it too, but I didn't bother going in. We both had a fever that lasted about six hours, have to blow our noses occasionally, with a minor cough. But we are both still working and wearing a mask in public. So busy at the hospital with this flue, won't even give my wife some time off. The ones that are really paying the price, kids, are the ones with other complications, like asthma or diabetes. They are the ones that are admitted, poor things.

Pedro and I had exactly that in June, when Pedro came over here (to Germany) to see me. We both had really high fever but it only lasted a day. That day felt really bad, but the next day it was much better already. Since then we have been wondering if that was the swine flu.

As a child of a doctor, I NEVER go to the doctor. (You know what they say about the cobler's children . . .) And I've only had one case of the flu in my life, and that was a "new" strain they called the "Italian flu" and it was an epidemic in Europe while I was there.

But I'm very nervous about the H1N1. My daughter has pretty severe asthma,. The older I get, the more morbid I get, and since having a child, this has become even more pronounced. Every time I feel complaisant about the flu (the sort of thing I would normally think was just a normal, immune-building experience that every child has to go through) I imagine the parents of all those children who have died (in this epidemic and the previous epidemics) who I'm sure never thought it would happen to their child. It scares the sh*t out of me!!!!!!. The vaccine scare the sh*t out of me too, but just a little bit less.

By the way, they aren't doing tests for the H1N1. They are testing for type A. If you test positive for type A, they are assuming it is H1N1, so people who have "had" H1N1, may have only had another type A flu. If it is serious, they might test for H1N1.
