I have a 1.5 year old Torte short hair female and I'm thinking of adopting a second from the shelter....any tips? She's fairly non territorial with Males so I was thinking of getting a male kitten.

Sousuke - I have no advice (sorry!) but also I am in the same situation. I haz a OK from the wife for a cat...would like to get a Tabby from a shelter and I wonder if 2 Tabbys would be better (for them)...

Good luck!

It'll depend on them. They might get along famously from hour one or like most, they'll hiss and posture for a few days with some occasional bops to the head and then get over it.

Real love stories never have endings...

I had a 1.2 year old kitty who is deaf and was a bit lonley... So I adopted another kitty who was about 6 months old from the shelter to keep her company. They did a bit of fighting at first for who was boss but now they are best friends... They play and hang out together... But introduce them slowly, keep the new kitty in a seperate room and let them sniff each other through the door for a day, then start to let them together slowly, and by a week they should be OK.. You will have some hissing and a few fights, but after 2-3 weeks, they should be OK...

Having 2 is a lot of fun, they get along like 2 peas in a pod now!!! They have been together for almost a year now... Good luck

Go for it. A male kitten should be fine. Expect your existing cat to be a little hissy and stand offish at first - and follow Christeen's advice. That should pass and they will probably be good friends.

Oh.

Get them both fixed.

Right.

I did the same thing you did. My female cat was first and I brought in a male cat. She hated him for the first week or 2 but now they get along great, they even sleep together sometimes.

Be sure that both cats are tested for Feline Leukemia and FIV. Not something you want to be sharing. Good luck! :D

Kitties are awesome. :luv:

Thanks all.

Bella is fixed but I do have a question about night time. She tends to sleep with us in the bedroom. What about the new one, I'd hate to shut him out for the first few nights.

He will be OK the first few nights, he will probably enjoy the peace and quiet after the shelter and sometimes they have a bit of the kitty sniffles from kitty colds that run rampant in the kennels... just get a comfy bed, then, after they get used to each other and you are sure he doesent have any cold or illness, you move the bed into your room, it will be his little safe haven... he will be OK no worries, just find a quiet room for him and put a littler box and water. They do better being in a smaller, non-confrontational room to begin with, until they get used to everything... Slowly is the key to a smooth adjustment!

Since when can you stop a cat from sleeping wherever he wants?

The OP is talking about what to do with the new kitty at night... It is best to put the new kitty in a seperate room so they and the old kitty can slowly adjust to each other. I was suggesting that they put the new kitty in a seperate room with a comfy bed, water and litter box. Of course you cannot MAKE a cat sleep in the bed, but you can put one in there for them. Then, after the cats are adjusted, you leave the new kitty roam where it wants too and put the bed in your room at night... I would not leave a new kitty roam a strange house alone with another cat until they are used to each other... Nor would I make the older cat feel territorial by allowing a new cat to sleep in the room with them.... This was what my vet suggested and it worked wonderful for my kittys...
