Christie said the state was circumventing laws requiring arts funding.

"You're right about the arts being an economic engine in the state," Christie said. "You know what a night at the New Jersey Performing Arts Center does to this area, to the city of Newark."

"That's what we need to be doing more of, not less of," he said.

Daggett said the state should triple the budget for tourism promotion.

"In a bad economy, people turn to the arts," he said.

Corzine said arts funding declined because of "tough choices" in the midst of a recession.

"You can't do that without some tough outcomes. I care more about making certain we fund our food banks, that we have legal services for those that are in foreclosure," he said. "Not because we don't support the arts, but because we have to make tough choices."
