Unless I missed something, apply for your Canadian Passport..I know you were worried about student loans but apply for it. Get your passport so you can work on you AOS and just deal with the calls for your student loans. Once you get your AOS and can go to work, then you can work on the student loans. Try it...what do you have to lose. Good luck.

I agree. Kittyfang, why did you say that you can not get a passport?I do not remember.

Not paying your bills shouldn't get you a "criminal record". There are other things that qualify, but definitely not this.

Well, I'm getting conflicting information from Passport Canada.

I was told that I cannot get a Passport because I do not have a valid picture ID.

Then I was told I could use the SIN card instead of the picture ID, along with my birth certificate.

Then I was told that I cannot get a Passport because of unpaid student loans.

Then I was told that I can get a passport even with student loans.

Then I was told that I cannot gt a passport with Birth Certificate and SIN card because I need a picture ID.

And yes, I think the health card is a national picture ID. That is the one I showed at the border and I was fine.

Just a cautious note here from me. We may think and feel that they don't look carefully at our IDs but in most Govt issued IDs important dates like expiration etc are in RED.

PHOTO IDENTIFICATION. Applicants must bring their Permanent Resident Card/Resident Alient Card, or a passport, driver's license, national ID, military ID, or State issued photo ID..... (It seems that if you had any of these even though expired it should be good).

But it's still only my feeling, you must confirm it with USCIS, or hope someone in similar situation in the past is on VJ and replies.

My good wishes are with you.

That is not quite accurate. My old Massachusetts Driver's License's expiration date was in blue. My current VA driver's license has nothing red on it.

But anyway, like you said the big question is : do they need a valid ID or people could go with an expired one as well?

Kittyfang-I would bring everything for this Bio apppointment: birth certificate, health card and the marriage certificate. I would start showing the Health Card first -the only one that has your picture.

Have you called to find out if you could get the travel document? You might get results.

As far as I could see, travel document is for permanent resident only. There is a section about who cannot apply and it states that Canadian Citizen cannot apply.

So what do they do for the Canadian citizens abroad who don;'t have the proper necessary documentation to travel back to Canada?THERE MUST BE SOMETHING!

Kittyfang-is your Health Card a government issued ID?

Anybody-what is a "National ID"?Just curious.

A national identity card is a portable document, typically a plasticized card with digitally-embedded information, that someone is required or encouraged to carry as a means of confirming their identity.

America does not have this as it is considerd 'violation of privacy' but many countrys do have it, can be helpful in identifying mangled bodys etc lol.

So this Health Card...could it be considered a national ID?

Just trying to help Kittyfang.

nope canadian health cards are not national ID cards. Just insurance cards for your health so people dont steal your insurance!

By they way I called the Biometrics place for Nebraska they said it has to be VALID ID. and has to be properly dated to enter the building. but thats just nebraska not sure what state you are in.

Bingo. I didn't order a passport because it wasn't needed, but more to the point, I wasn't planing on getting married and staying here.

you cannot renew a health card if you have not been living in canada. a SIN card is a social insurance number card, the equivelant of a social security number for america. SIN card will not help her its just a plastic card with a number on it from canada.

Yes, I've seen it. That is actually were I called. I was refered to Passport Canada, and was given the speech about "can use your SIN card". But then, when I called back, I was told I cannot. I think they alternate, on even days, I can. On odd days I cannot.

SI tried to look into health card, but I haven't been in Canada for the past 2.5 years... They need proof of residency.

I understood that, but at this moment it looks like Kittyfang needs a valid picture ID, otherwise she can't show up for the biometrics.

That's why we are talking about passports here or about any kind of valid documentation that will have her name and he picture. Right now she has only an expired health card and her birth certificate.

I understood that, but at this moment it looks like Kittyfang needs a valid picture ID, otherwise she can't show up for the biometrics.

That's why we are talking about passports here or about any kind of valid documentation that will have her name and he picture. Right now she has only an expired health card and her birth certificate.

Which is all that I showed when I crossed the border.

Maybe you should just apply for the passport regardless with your birth certificate copy of the health card and copy of the sin number do it all up and send it off and see what happens, even if you are getting conflicting information from the passport canada place the only real way to find out is to just try it and see if they will do it up for you or not.

I would try to apply for a passport regardless.

Right now-as a Canadian citizen-can you travel to Canada without a passport? Can you travel with an expired health card?

If NOT -you have the right to apply for a passport or for anything that gives you the opportunity to travel to your home country. I am sure it will have your name and your picture.

If you do not qualify for a passport, there must be SOMETHING ELSE with your name&picture that you would qualify for to be able to get out of US and return to your home country. If you get that-voila your government picture ID.

Maybe you should just apply for the passport regardless with your birth certificate copy of the health card and copy of the sin number do it all up and send it off and see what happens, even if you are getting conflicting information from the passport canada place the only real way to find out is to just try it and see if they will do it up for you or not.

YEP!I agree 100% :star: I would do it ASAP
