Only in your delusions.

And if you had any clue, you would know that it was Israel's ongoing civilian slaughter in Gaza, with the bombing of a family picnicing on the beach as the final cherry on top, that "started this whole mess."

But oh. I forget. You get your information from Ynet. LOL.

I really, really don't wish to get involved in these debates but the current death toll is sitting at something like 220 Lebanese and 21 Israelis -- Hezbollah may have "started it" but Israel's response has been incredibly disproportionate.

Maybe I'm wrong, but I would have thought the hostage situation called for Special Forces not a rain of bombs on civilian targets.

You are quite correct on both counts.

Have "any" Hezbollah been killed by Israel's assault on Lebanon ? The dead and wounded are overwhelmingly civilian non-combatants, as well as members of the Lebanese military and police forces that Israel keeps claiming are "not targets."

"Conventional" warfare is just about useless against a guerilla force.

I've been trying like mad to get a clear understanding to where this thing really started and two things seem to come out that are stopping me from getting a definitive answer.

Each time a Syrian, Iranian, or Hezbollian representative is interviewed they call the action of Hezbollah (who'm they curiously refer to as "the resistance") justified due to "Israeli Occupation". I was under the impression that Israel finished it's occupation of Lebanon in 2001. Is this not true?

If all agree that it's true, then the only Occupation they could be referring to is that of the Golan Heights in Syria and the Occupation of Palestinean territories, and while this is perhaps a noble deed to come to the aid of your comrades, it cannot be considered some sort of act of "resistance" on their part to go in and kidnap another countrie's soldier. Otherwise you would call the U.S invasion of Iraq an act of "resistance" since they went in to liberate the oppressed Kurds. That doesn't really work for me at least. Maybe there is another explanation.

Second, while the Israeli response has been harsh, it can hardly be called a suprise. The view that Israel overuses it's military strength and exercises unlawful collective punishment to innocent Arabs is a common view to Hezbollah and most Palestineans, isn't it? In other words, they had to be expecting this response. So, if Hezbollah triggers a move they know is going to result in the deaths of many innocent civilians, how can they not be held almost entirely responsible for the action? If I go and throw a big rock at a hornets nest and one of those hornets stings my neighbor, does he get angry at the hornets? Doubt it.

Agreed. A big part of the problem is that the fundamentalists know (and count on) Israel responding in exactly the manner they are. So essentially, the terrorists win every time because Israel's response invariably causes death and damage to the civilian population and infrastructure. The guy who's house is blown up in an airstrike, in all probability, doesn't give a flying ** about the "why", just that it happened and the he is short 1 house (and possibly several family members). I don't think that's too difficult to understand.

As has been said Hezbollah is essentially a militia front for Syria and Iran who fund and equip them. Essentially its a clandestine war, not too dissimilar to the way in which western governments have armed and supported dictators. After all, the US supported Saddam to weaken (and possibly topple) the iranians. From their perspective this probably isn't all that different.

As for who should pay for the evacuation of American citizens.... well isn't it obvious ? The complete cost of rescuing our people -- including the helicopters, the cruise ship, the restaurants and hotels in Cyprus, the airfares, the military escort, the whole shebang -- ALL of it should be billed to Israel.

Even though Hizballah started this whole mess?

Oh wait, I forgot. You're VJs very own Hizballah correspondent, aren't ya? :luv:

The civilian casualties in Lebanon are the fault of the terrorist. They hide behind women and children, fire their rockets from peoples back yards and HOPE that the Isrealies cause civilian casualties. They are gutless cowards and should burn in hell.

I think it's best if we just drop this discussion for the time being. More than one member of the VJ family is either themselves or has loved ones caught up in this so it is a very sensistive subject for a lot of people. I think everyone can understand that people's emotions are really high right now and we're all adults here so I don't see why we can't just talk about something else at least until it blows over and folks here are not worried that a missle might actually drop on them!!!!

I think having 127 different threads about this topic is very distasteful considering the circumstances. People are dying and the rest fearing for their lives.

Can we please just let this go for now????? (F)

The IDF has found that Hizbullah is preventing civilians from leaving villages in southern Lebanon. Roadblocks have been set up outside some of the villages to prevent residents from leaving, while in other villages Hizbullah is preventing UN representatives from entering, who are trying to help residents leave. In two villages, exchanges of fire between residents and Hizbullah have broken out.

Is anyone even surprised?

"The fact that we are here today to debate raising America’s debt limit is a sign of leadership failure. It is a sign that the U.S. Government can’t pay its own bills. It is a sign that we now depend on ongoing financial assistance from foreign countries to finance our Government’s reckless fiscal policies."

I'm not.

The only response from our unofficial VJ Hizballah correspondent has been to laugh at the source.

There are many topics debated on a wide variety of subjects: political, religious, etc. I suggest that if it upsets you this much that maybe you ignore the threads.
