<h3 id="header-news-title" class="hardwareTitle">Linus Torvalds Gives Windows 7 a Thumbs Up</h3>

Ah Linux – the free, open source operating system that bucks the mass market trend. Those who know it inside out may love it because it's many things that Windows is not.

The founding father of Linux, Linus Torvalds, one that you wouldn't expect to be paying attention to Windows 7, was actually caught giving a big thumbs up to the new Microsoft operating system. See?

linus-torvalds-windows-7,1-Q-228158-13.jpg

In actuality, Torvalds was attending the Japan Linux Symposium. The picture was taken as some sort of gag, as Torvalds did not purchase a copy from that stall.

Windows uses the Win32 API. Since Win32 API have been exposed countless times, there's not way to stop people from developing viruses.

Whether or not you like Microsoft, I'd recommend Windows 7. Many software tools in Ubuntu aren't as advanced as Microsoft. Same as compatibility. Ubuntu is nice for basic stuff.

Are you getting paid by Microsoft?

Seriously just use what works best. For my work laptop i use Fedora, but on my home PC i am running Windows. All the applications I used to do web development work just fine on Linux. I even use a couple of windows based tools with wine.

Windows 7 is best.Because it has better features then the other. And Windows 7 is a vast improvement from Vista as it takes up much less ram and has other optimizations such as fast booting times. I recommend Windows 7, and if you really don't want vista and don't want to wait for the final version of Windows 7, you can download a copy of the Release Candidate from the Microsoft website for free and use it up till June of 2010. I am working with the Release Candidate right now and so far I have absolutely no complaints, considering Im a heavy computer use with advanced software.

I have Windows 7 on the desktop here at my shop, and I HATE it. Call me a retro-grouch, but I miss the "Classic" menus and such that were still available in Vista. And what the hell are "Libraries"? Gimme "My Documents", put it on my desktop, and I'm happy. At least give me a solid, real path to the location and I'm happy. Libraries? GTFO!

LoL. Makes more sense now. I am not the computer whiz in the family, my brother is. He has me setup with Linux Ubuntu. If I go to "applications" and then "system tools" and then click on "Sun Virtualbox" I can switch to Windows.

It's setup so that I can switch operating systems with one click and no loading but the "Sun Virtualbox" freezes, crashes, and shuts off too much so I just stick with Ubuntu.

I am assuming this is how wine works?

Not exactly. Its not the same thing as a virtual machine like virtualbox. Wine allows programs to run within linux. However, not all programs actually work. There are some commercial versions of wine that improve compatibility for certain applications like transgaming cedega for gaming and crossover office for other applications. Wine by itself does pretty well.

I don't work for Microsoft. I, however, know pretty much what goes on inside the machine. Whether or not you use Fedora, CentOS, Solaris, Ubuntu, Debian, or whatever...The POSIX API is useful for applications that requires security.

The problem with is that everyone (every developer) are creating applications that are half-azz for a lack of better term. OpenOffice, gDB, CodeBlocks, etc...are very low standards. People are definitely developing and progressing, but, due to the sheer number of people with unlimited time (think they can take their time to code apps like to do it leisurely) have a tough time competing with private enterprise. As private enterprise competes with each other layering another with higher, and higher standards and rigid developer time frame makes open source hard to adapt as developers spends time whenever they're free from work or whatever which slows down development.

Linux is fine if you want to play around with it. POSIX have matured in terms of security, but, has not dealt well with WIN32 API for a number of reasons.

I don't think you have any idea what you are talking about?

Bad developers exist on every platform. You will find them in closed source software just as much as open source software. Most committed open source software developers are actually employed by private enterprise to develop open source.

Open office is not #######, though I can't really speak for the other applications.

Yes I do know exactly with what I am talking about.

The OpenSource projects at sourceforge.net is mostly half azz. Mostly doesn't mean all as I'm using PDFCreator without any problems.

if you think open source is half assed look at the browser market.

Open source browsers:

Firefox

Safari (Webkit based)

Chrome (Webkit based)

Closed source browser

IE

Opera

Firefox, Safari and Chrome are the best browsers currently on the market. All of them are based on open source. Opera is generally pretty good but has low adoption rates and the closed source king, IE, sucks really bad.

If you look at other open-source projects you will find that they often hold up very well against their closed source competitors.

Facebook as mysql scaled to 50,000 database servers. They didn't need to buy oracle to do it.

Open source languages such as PHP, Python and Ruby power some of the largest sites on the internet. Take that ASP.net.
