For me vista got increasingly unstable with each new update. The upgrade to service pack 1 was such a nightmare due to poor driver support in windows update that Microsoft had an entire tech team offering free support to users to apply it.

Even since then its not been problem free

Yeah, but isn't that the same group of people and corporation that developed Windows 7?

I wasn't born cynical, Microsoft helped to make me that way.

I switched off auto upgrades with XP, if the computer is working fine, leave it, the more ####### you are running the more problems you have. If I have a problem, search the net for a solution. Vista can also be switched off for auto upgrades, but took awhile to figure that out.

The problem with that is that the fixes are usually to prevent exploits used by the creators of trojans and viruses. If you don't update windows - it can affect the updates that are applied to your security software.

The big difference between Vista and Windows 7 is that 7 had a public beta testing process that Vista didn't. I'm less inclined to believe microsoft than I am to trust the word of end users who have been using the OS for months.

I have a hardware firewall, switches all that IP stuff around, never had a problem with a hacker. Friends, if I can call them that, that send me #######, don't even open it, delete it.

Yes - that wasn't a problem. SP1 had issues because it required every driver on your system to be up to date - but the Windows Update at the time didn't support some of the later versions of the drivers, so some things had to be rolled back to make it happy.

Issues I have no are things not starting up properly on bootup (including antivirus), the Media Center inexplicably crashing. Nothing critical - just a lot of small annoyances.

What antivirus are you using? Is this new since SP2 or has it been ongoing? Are you considering Win 7 at all?

Vista is bloated. It is a resource hog. Slows down your PC. Boots slow. Incompatible with so many software programs and devices. Everyone except Booyah gets these problems, cuz he is such a big stud and has a huge johnson.

Let's not violate the TOS, OK?

Make your point without insults.

Hmmm, the biggest compliment a man can get is to be called a big stud with a big johnson, and it is all in fun. Booyah is the man and a cool guy. Why are you here trying to make a problem out of something that is not. I find your witch hunting insulting and instagatory. Please go dig somewhere else. Peace.

You an BY were disagreeing in a topic that I was participating in. You made a comment that I felt deserved a warning. If you haven't noticed, I help moderate here. Your comment was "not all good".

Microsoft released a free version of AntiVirus. I don't need to ever buy another one.

Does that detect rootkits though? A lot of the free versions of security programs (AVG, AVIRA, Panda) don't.

Microsoft have a larger software programming team than AVG, AVIRA, and PANDA combined. I would be surprise if Microsoft product are not better quality than those free ones. Many of the programmers works in inter-departments. One team may be doing OS Layer design such as the Hardware Abstraction Layer (HAL), but, they will provide feedback to the Application Layer of the OS. The free versions of antivirus don't have that same luxury.

But, it's a great question to ask. Looks like AJ found out the solution.
