Socialism, the opium of the people, yay!

What I find is odd, is that most of the people on VJ have actually traveled and even traveled to some of these scummy socialist countries (spit) that they don't want America to be like and with this knowledge they continue to believe that not only are these countries scummy socialist countries (spit) but also that America's government isn't already bigger and at least as invasive as the socialist scummy countries (spit) that they so despise. It's all very, very odd.

Yes it is.

The Peoples Republic of America moved to cap compensation for executives on wall street. We should all be proud!

Do you actually believe the people who put us into this mess should receive record bonuses?

NYC's grip on the country and government is a joke. Are you the United states of America or the United States owned by NYC?

According to the Internal Revenue Service, the 400 richest American households earned a total of $US138 billion, up from $US105 billion a year earlier. That's an average of $US345 million each, on which they paid a tax rate of just 16.6 per cent.

But each barrel comes with a free beret, a stripey sweater and a string of onions.

I want curling stones and hockey sticks though.

and their jackoff peons on this thread try to protect them.

Everyone's afraid that we're going towards socialism in this country but what most don't realize is that if we don't make some major changes, regular people like all of us here will be much much worse off, I don't even want to imagine what our children's situation will be.

First off, people are idiots, Obama is trying to build a social democracy. That is not socialism. Big difference.

The previous US style anything goes capitalist system is only used in third world countries. Is that what people want to be known for? their countries third world ways. Aka every person for themselves; top 15% do well while the rest are dirt poor.

Just because we're next to South America, doesn't mean we should become like them.

Thank you you put it into words that I did not.

I don't think it's fair that while the unemployment rate continues to be 10% that the financial institutions that laid of tons of people off should give their execs huge bonuses, it's not morally right. Their screw ups led to many people (some of whom I know, I live in NY and have friends who work(ed) for these companies), getting laid off and having no source of income to support their families, losing their homes and health insurance.

More than a partisan debate, I believe it's a moral one.

Well were not exactly going away from Socialism. I think what a lot of people take issue with is having strong socialist characteristics similar to what you would in find in a lot of Europe, heading that direction is what people often take issue with, yes we have our problems here in the states that need to be fixed but I dont think that modeling the United States after Finland is the only answer or the best answer.

I can even see Central America from my window - I'm waving at them now :)

It is sad that the nearest foreign land from where I currently sit lies in the socialist province of Quebec.

You should be very afraid! You know how those socialists like to invade things ;)

Refusing to use the spellchick!

I have put you on ignore. No really, I have, but you are still ruining my enjoyment of this site. .

Indeed. Why would anyone want a better standard of living :P

Personally I think people take issue with this stuff for the wrong reasons - and they often don't know what they are objecting to. As has been shown on here innumerable times people have great difficulty perceiving the distinction between liberalism, socialism, social democracy and communism.

What social characteristics would you find in Europe but not in the States Simpson?
