"A large, ugly fish common in Atlantic coastal areas. Also known as anglerfish, goosefish or 'allmouth' due to its oversized mouth. It is so unattractive that French fishermen used to cut its head off at sea for fear of frightening landlubbers. Popular in Japanese cuisine where it is often served as sashimi.

The Standard Fish Name (SFN) for monkfish is Stargazer."

Bought a two-for-one deal of frozen monkfish at Super H Mart tonight ($6.99). It tasted good at the cookstand they had but now I read more about it and I wonder what the heck it is.

Any thoughts/experiences?

we saw it in the regular whole fish part of the store but it was the only one which did not have the head on it. hahaha

moving right along

if you get a big one (over 15 pounds ) - take the head, make 'fish head curry' -

it's frickin amazing...

You can find the recipe here - http://www.makantime.com/indexrecipes.html

It's popular in Singapore, and MOST coastal cities in China. If yer not into eyeballs, invite a friend who IS into eyeballs.

in Henan province this fish is prepared "head only" as a delicacy. the fish head is steamed till tender and served in a watery broth containing oils and chunks of dried red pepper and spices. the peppers and pepper oil make it a bit hot for most people, but quite tasty. the most tender meat is behind the jaw, and the eye is always presented to the honored guest or oldest man at the table. it's common for other men to take the jawbone in chopsticks and suck the meat off of it. not quite western table manners, to say the least.

one of my favourite dishes in luoyang, and offered at all of the better seafood restaraunts.

Last thing I need is my wife to start cooking things I don't know ANYTHING about....

Oh...mmmmmm....wait a minute.......

She already does that.

She cut up some fish so it looks like miniature corn on the cob. It took her 2 minutes to cut up a hole fish. That girl is FAST!!!

It was white when we bought it. It was tasty when I ate it.

There was no head involved....so....it could have been better according to her!!!

That's good stuff, and the way she cut it up - the best way to present the meat for cooking (cooks evenly )

But - if you eat a pound of that for evening meal - wei - you've added some vitality to your body - I'm betting she knows EXACTLY what kind of result, and was planning ahead... ;)
