A senior manager who's worked here for decades, who's daddy worked here all his life... recently cracked a joke at a lady who works in our cafeteria saying she looks just like Sonia Sotomayor. Saying she could be SCOTUS justice too, looking like that.

Water cooler rumor is that it's gone all the way to HR.

why is it racist to comment on how someone else looks like? i.e. someone you know looks like chris rock and you say that to him, but you are white....that's supposed to be racist how? you just look like chris rock and i wanted to say something and that's it....

i dunno, .....sometimes i think people are too sensitive nowadays

Saying she could be SCOTUS justice too, looking like that.

Sotomayor = Supreme Court judge? NO?

SCOTUS = Supreme Court of the United States

Is that not a compliment? Or should she just serve food?

According to the Internal Revenue Service, the 400 richest American households earned a total of $US138 billion, up from $US105 billion a year earlier. That's an average of $US345 million each, on which they paid a tax rate of just 16.6 per cent.

No, it is not a compliment BY, those are the words of a smarmy git. I am not surprised you find them perfectly acceptable.

So saying to someone that they look like a prominent well known and respected US supreme court judge is not a compliment?

I think the implication is that she just got the job because of the colour of her skin and that even a cafeteria lady could do her job

Well they could couldn't they?

Its not like you need any professional qualifications to be on the supreme court.

Hell, BY could do it. Just rant and rave about how people have too many rights and Bobs your father's brother!

That's not all that was said. Had he said something on the lines of "Has anyone ever said you look remarkably like Sotomayor"? That would have been acceptable if perhaps embarrassing. That is not what he said or implied but BY, you know this already, why do you want to get back on this merry-go-round?

I don't see anything racial about saying that one person looks like another person. To take it as a racial slur is to read into it. Of course, he may have meant it as a racial slur, but I can't tell, and neither can anyone else on this forum tell if he did. You would be in the best position to do that.

I know all too well what that means here on VJ. It will be twisted to the point where he apparently meant he wants her to die and eat maggots.

He was complementing here. Numerous guys I work with that are from jersey have that sort of humor / mannerism.

it is the part in bold that makes the statement questionable...

He didn't just say, "wow, you look just like Sotomayor blah blah blah", though did he? Are you being deliberately obtuse now? Are you that stubborn or just simply stupid? I can't decide, help me out here.

Half of my posts are perceived as being racist when in reality they are not. As a matter of fact, I have had to get suspended to actually prove what the difference is.

Of course. You and pikey have demonstrated on numerous occasions, that you know more about what a person is saying, than the person saying it. With that in mind, you tell me who the idiot is?

The guy is Italian and from Jersey. Like myself, they tend to shoot from the hip but do not intend to offend.
