He has had 2 operations on his heart. The first when he was 17, and the second recently 2 years ago. He has a mechanical mitral valve and now his aorta is leaking a little.

Wow! I assume it isn't so serious that he can't travel but a leaking aortic valve is serious but not like an aortic aneurysm.
